Following our statewide listening sessions, we previously announced additional opportunities for people to give feedback on the organization in the form of virtual listening sessions and a survey. The survey is open to the public as well as staff, and includes four primary questions, as well as demographic questions. All responses are anonymous. Anyone can complete the survey online through January 23, 2024.

MSU Extension, in cooperation with Farm Bureau, Chartwells of CMU and the Michigan Wheat Board, is offering a cooking competition for area teens. Teens will have the opportunity to display their culinary skills, while learning a little in the process. Prizes are awarded for Overall Champion, Best Presentation, and Most Creative.
This event offers a little education mixed in with a lot of hands-on experience preparing a culinary creation from a list of mandatory ingredients, and a surprise mystery ingredient given the day of the competition.
Your participation includes registering by Monday, October 9, 2023, attending a MANDAORY meeting on Monday, October 16th, practicing with your team on your own time, and competing in the event on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Your team also has an option to consult with Chef Jared Miller as you develop your recipes. Ask Extension link: https://www.canr.msu.edu/outreach/ask-an-expert
Here is an example of questions we receive:
Q: Could this be a pine bark adelgid problem?
A: The trees have lost needles due to a fungal disease called needlecast. Naturally occurring lichen is now growing on the lower dead branches. Needlecast is a disease that commonly affects blue spruce trees and involved a fungus that effectively grows into and clogs the stomata, or the holes through which the needles exchange gasses with the atmosphere. The needles turn brown and drop off; this begins with the inner most needles and spreads outward. Below is a link to an article that describes needlecast, and how one can treat it. https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rhizosphaera-needle-cast
