Learn more about this fantastic program with several sessions in Minneapolis and Winona (which several of our current and former Guard Members are facilitating, along with our partners at MHC). Sign up for sessions has been extended until later this month. Please share with any veterans or family members who might be interested!

Discussion series beginning the first week of April: Veterans, active service members, and civilians are invited to contribute to the “Examining Military Service From the Margins” four-week discussion series taking place in Minneapolis and Winona. This series will spark conversation and interaction among participants to disrupt commonly held stereotypes, unearth less visible narratives of war and human experience, and help bridge the military-civilian divide.

Facilitated by Discussion Leaders that are either active service members or Veterans, each week in the series will use guiding questions and a set of core-shared resources like oral histories and films, to better understand how race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion have caused the military service of some individuals to be devalued or limited in some capacity. Additional resources will be offered each week for those with extra time wanting to explore further.

Free to attend, but registration is required. Register for one or all four sessions. Learn more at mnhum.org/program/examining-military-service-from-the-margins/.

Did You Know? Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. In addition to her role as an Underground Railroad conductor, she became the first woman in recorded American history to lead a military assault. The successful Combahee Ferry Raid freed more than 700 slaves.

One of the most famous and successful conductors on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman was dedicated to causes improving the lives of African Americans, women, and people with disabilities. The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, and Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park invite you to Travel with Tubman. This virtual trip planning tool, also hosted on the National Park Service App, highlights 13 places important to Harriet Tubman’s life and legacy.
