Planning a weekend getaway to our Land Trust properties? We've got you covered! Despite the recent rains by Tropical Storm Debby leaving the ground heavily saturated, our diligent Stewardship team has ensured safety throughout. However, caution and vigilance are still advisable as falling trees may still pose a risk. Stay safe and enjoy your visit!

If you see a downed tree, or any other damage, on a Land Trust property, please call our office at (912) 638-9109. Thank you!

You know who's happy today? This epiphyte right here! πŸ’¦πŸŒΏ

Resurrection fern, one of the most iconic native plants in our area, can endure losing a staggering 97% of its water in dire drought, and yet bounce back to life! While most plants couldn't face a 10% drop, this fern stands strong. Luckily, our green friends do not need to test their survival abilities this week!

Who can ID this native plant growing at Guale Preserve? πŸ™‹ The vines can be seen climbing up the trunks of large trees like our beloved live oak. Its fruit, a valuable food source for native wildlife, can also be enjoyed by humans.

Remember, Land Trust properties have a "No Collecting" policy. πŸ™… While you might be tempted to pick these sweet treats, please leave them for the wildlife! 🦌🐦

Last week, the Land Trust lost one of its most dedicated volunteers, Nancy Berlin. Nancy was a cherished member of the Land Trust family who began her journey with us in 2022 and swiftly rose to earn a top volunteer position in 2023. She selflessly contributed more than 65 hours across three key volunteering categories: conservation, events, and administration.

Nancy's commitment to the Land Trust's mission was evident in her eagerness to participate anytime there was a need, and she was always among the first to lend a helping hand. Nancy's infectious spirit, coupled with her dedication to excellence and to see every project through to the finish, served as an inspiration to staff and volunteers.

While we mourn the loss of Nancy, we are profoundly grateful to have known such a remarkable individual. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy of conservation and positivity will forever resonate within our community. Thank you, Nancy! πŸ’šπŸ’š

We love our live oaks! πŸŒ³πŸ’š Land Trust volunteers recently partnered with Golden Isles Fund for Trees - GIFT to have 17 live oaks at Old Stables Corner measured and registered with the Louisiana Garden Club Federation's Live Oak Society.

We were pleased to discover that 16 of the 17 trees measured are estimated to be at least 100 years old. The largest specimen on site, measuring nearly 22ft in girth, has a canopy spreading over 130ft and is estimated to be 250 years old!

Stop by the beloved property soon to see these majestic trees and their new bling! ✨

Yucca, found at many Land Trust properties, provides food and shelter for many small animals, including insects, reptiles and birds. Its beautiful bell-shaped flowers attract butterflies, and it's also the only host plant for the yucca moth, which is the only insect that can pollinate the yucca flower and its fruit. πŸ¦‹

Join us in thanking our July Ambassador of the Month - ANNA HAMMOCK! πŸ‘

Like many Land Trust Ambassadors, Anna was born and raised in the Golden Isles. Her love and knowledge of all aspects of Glynn County led Anna to become involved in Real Estate in 2021. She is very passionate about her work and won 2023 Rookie of the Year. Anna embodies everything an organization would hope for in an ambassador - she radiates positivity, is an incredibly hard worker, and is kind to everyone she encounters. We are very proud to have her representing the Land Trust!

YOU have done it! βœ… In less than a week, you matched and greatly exceeded the generous $25,000 matching challenge offered to the Land Trust by Golden Isles Fund for Trees - GIFT to help protect the beautiful live oak trees at 2404 Frederica Road. THANK YOU!

More than 120 of you contributed $50,000+! This means that with the GIFT challenge, more than $75,000 have been secured to help the Land Trust acquire the property's front lot and protect and maintain these majestic trees in perpetuity.

We are thrilled and grateful that "Old Ironsides" and the other specimen live oaks at 2404 Frederica Road will continue to be part of the island's canopy and can be enjoyed by everyone who walks, bikes, or drives down the Frederica Greenway. πŸŒ³πŸ’š

The Georgia DNR's annual bat monitoring at Cannon's Point Preserve took place over a two-night period last month. The Preserve is the only location on St. Simons Island where mist-netting surveys have been conducted, beginning in 2015.

The 19 captured bats included three different species, including Seminole bats (2), evening bats (10), and tricolored bats (7) - many of whom were juveniles.

Although biologists have captured tricolored bats on the Preserve before, being able to capture so many (especially juveniles) is exciting due to its Proposed Endangered status with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tricolored bats in north Georgia have declined significantly from white-nose syndrome, so the population persisting in south Georgia is of critical conservation importance.

Our Story

St. Simons Island is one of four islands on the southern coast of Georgia known as the Golden Isles. Home to more than 12,000 full-time residents, St. Simons is known for its stately live oaks, abundant salt and fresh water marshes, meandering creeks and rivers, and rich history. Spotted sea trout, redfish, flounder and tarpon are abundant in the creeks and near shore waters. And, just offshore is the calving ground for the North Atlantic Right Whale - the world's most endangered great whale. Not surprisingly, St. Simons is also a favorite destination for vacationers.

Like so many coastal areas, St. Simons experienced a population boom in the 1990s. Recognizing that the uniqueness of this barrier island would continue to attract new residents and thus be heavily impacted by development, the St. Simons Land Trust was born. Recognition is given to the vision of local leaders such as Ben Slade III, Frances McCrary, and Jim Manning and Jeannie Kaufmann who were the Land Trust's founding members, and the organization's first Executive Director, Catherine Main, who operated the Land Trust out of her home until 2001 when an office was opened on Frederica Road.

The St. Simons Land Trust has become a community institution entrusted with an extraordinary responsibility: to protect our scenic and historic treasures and to preserve the beauty and charm of our island for generations to come.

Since those early days, the Land Trust has preserved more than 1,000 acres, including two large preserves on the north end of the island. The first parcel of land protected was the Gilbert property on Frederica Road, now the site of the popular John Gilbert Nature Trail which was opened to the public in 2006.

Like more than 1,600 land trusts across the country, the SSLT works with willing property owners to preserve their land using tools that include: conservation easements, donations of land and outright purchases of land through tax advantaged "bargain sales." We are guided in our work by our most recent strategic plan for land conservation on the island that has established target areas for our work and priorities for transactions.
