Our Story

In May 2008, Robert Jones and Cyndi Graham led the plan for an alternative performance arts company in Salisbury known as Lee Street Theatre. Today, the company is known for its diverse style of live theatre offerings such as original plays, off-Broadway shows and musicals, concerts, variety shows, dance performances, and special events.

In 2013, the North Carolina Theatre Conference presented Lee Street Theatre with its 2013 Community Theatre Award. This award recognized the important collaboration among Lee Street’s staff, its Board of Directors, St. Thomas Players, volunteers and people in the community to develop and produce an excellent theatre experience. In 2017, the theatre ranked second among the “Ten Best Places for Live Theatre” in North Carolina. The press release announcing this honor states, “Lee Street is the place in Salisbury to grab a show and “experience the feeling.” The Board of Directors and staff are proud to be recognized by the industry for its hard work and dedication to provide quality entertainment to the citizens of Salisbury and surrounding communities.

During the theatre’s infancy, Lee Street Theatre rented the Black Box Theatre at the Looking Glass Artists Center for Performances. In September 2012, Lee Street began a $1.5 million Capital Campaign to buy and renovate a warehouse at 329 Lee Street. The Board of Directors invited St. Thomas Players, a troupe of the Center for Faith and the Arts, to share the new space. The doors opened in the Lee Street Theatre & Performing Arts Center at the Tom and Martha Smith Event Center on November 7, 2013 for the sold out performance of All the Great Books (Abridged), by Austin Tichenor and Reed Martin.

Lee Street continues to offer opportunities “to experience the feeling” both inside and outside the confines of our space. In 2011, it partnered with the Salisbury Convention and Visitors Bureau to bring the classic Charles Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol, to life aboard a city trolley. Going into its 6th year, the Scrooge’s Christmas Trolley Tour has become a family tradition. In 2014, the theatre began its Voices From the Margin series, a program that offers an opportunity to hear the stories of those held in the margin of our society and of those that many of us see and think about, but don’t take the time to listen to or learn from. These original plays are written in partnerships with various agencies in the community. Also in 2014, Lee Street Theatre and the North Carolina Transportation Museum, along with Warner Brothers studio brought The Polar Express train ride experience to life. By 2017, the attendance will exceed 30,000 people.
