In a recent Acupuncture Today article, the author discusses GERD and how Western medicine frequently recommends proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) medications for symptoms. Patients often take these prescriptions for five-plus years, resulting in side effects such as B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, increased susceptibility to pneumonia, enteric infections, fractures, and hypergastrinemia. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers many alternatives for patients to these PPI medications. Ginger and turmeric are both warming herbs which are perfect this time of year.

In TCM, Turmeric or "Jiang Huang" belongs to the 'Herbs that invigorate the Blood' category. Like the name indicates these herbs tend to stimulate the Blood flow. In TCM they're used to help the circulation of Blood in cardiovascular conditions or menstrual irregularities as well as to treat acute pains caused by Blood Stagnation. They can also be used to treat Blood Stagnation when it causes certain tumors, cysts and hardened clots.

Ginger or "Sheng Jiang" belongs to the 'Warm/Acrid herbs that release the Exterior' category. Herbs that release the Exterior aim to to treat the early stages of diseases that affect the upper respiratory tract, the eyes, the ears, the nose, the throat or the skin. TCM believes that External diseases such as colds or allergies can only invade the body if the External environment overwhelms our Wei Qi (the TCM version of the immune system). In order to counteract this invasion Warm/Acrid herbs aim to induce sweating by increasing the flow of sweat to our capillary pores. The belief is that this will expel the disease from the body and stop it from invading further.

Additionally, both Turmeric and Ginger are warm in nature. They tend to help people who have too much 'Cold' in their body. Balance between Yin and Yang is a key health concept in TCM. Those who have too much Cold in their body are said to either have a Yin Excess (because Yin is Cold in nature) or a Yang Deficiency (Yang is Hot in Nature). Depending on your condition Turmeric and Ginger can help restore a harmonious balance between Yin and Yang.
