About Cristela Alonzo:

A native of San Juan, Texas, Cristela Alonzo made history in 2014 when she became the first Latina to create, produce and star in her own network sitcom Cristela for ABC. During that same year, she split her time between Los Angeles and New York to serve as one of ABC’s favorite guest hosts on their hit daytime talk show The View. In 2017 Alonzo made history again when she became the first Latina lead in a Disney Pixar film when she voiced the part of Cruz Ramirez in Cars 3. Her first stand-up special, Lower Classy, is currently streaming on Netflix. Alonzo’s memoir, Music to My Years: A Mixtape-Memoir of Growing Up and Standing Up, was released in October of 2019 by Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Luis Alonzo also has a podcast titled To Be Continued, which can be streamed on all major podcasting platforms.

Aside from comedy, Alonzo focuses on advocacy work, fighting for issues that range from immigration, universal healthcare and advocating on behalf of lower income communities with numerous organizations including Special Olympics Texas, People for the United Way, Planned Parenthood, LUPE (La Union del Pueblo Entero), and serves as advisory board member for Define American.

“I am a first-generation American born to an undocumented mother that taught me to love this country. I believe it is my duty to give back and fight so that everyone can get the same thing my family got: a chance.” – Cristela Alonzo

Ayala: San Antonio College closer to shedding racist vestiges in its mascot 06/26/2020

Please read the important message below from our friends at SAC too. Cut and paste the message to share:

We need your support:

For almost two years, SAC students have been leading the effort to rid SAC of the Ranger mascot through holding teach-ins, presentations, meetings, and so much more. They have met with our SAC President Dr. Robert Vela multiple times, and he now understands that the mascot must go. For much of its nearly 200-year history, the Texas Rangers organization, from which the SAC mascot took its name in 1926, created terror for Tejanos, Texas Indians, and Black people and were responsible for many deaths of innocent People of Color. The seminal work of Dr. Monica Muñoz Martinez, _The Injustice Never Leaves You_ and the more recent book by Doug Swason, _Cult of Glory_, capture this racialized violence. This Slate article also captures some of that history: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2016/05/texas-finally-begins-to-grapple-with-its-ugly-history-of-border-violence-against-mexican-americans.html

If you are a SAC faculty, staff, student; alumni; or San Antonio community member who understands why SAC should rid itself of the Ranger, please visit this website
https://sacweb03.sac.alamo.edu/eMascot/MascotFeedback
and vote "No" before July 8th, 5pm.

Please consider leaving a public comment or speaking during the College Council meeting on 7/14. Thank you!
