I'd like to wish Ms. Vanessa Jackson a happy retirement! Ms. V has worked at the city for 16 years and currently serves the residents of District 1 in Council President Pro Tem LaCava's office. She can always be counted on to bring a ray of sunshine to your day, sometimes just through a kind comment and sometimes just with that wonderful smile as you walk past her in the hallway. Ms. V you will be greatly missed! ❤️
My office will be hosting a Town Hall at the Otay Mesa-Nestor Library this Thursday July 25th from 5-7pm! I will be introducing the newly appointed Fire-Rescue Chief, Robert Logan II and will speak on topics including upcoming and current CIP projects such as Beyer Park and Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park. We will also review recent Get It Done reports, streetlights and talk about the Tijuana River-Valley!
Today I had the pleasure of proclaiming July 23, 2024 as "Daniela Kelly Day" in the City of San Diego! Ms. Kelly has served as the Executive Director of the Sherman Heights Community Center for 4 years and has made a lot of positive changes, including new programs for kids and offering cooking classes. She is dedicated to supporting the physical, mental, and social well-being of residents, seniors, and families throughout District 8! Congratulations!

Yesterday we honored and remembered the 21 victims of the July 18, 1984 McDonald’s tragedy in San Ysidro. Thank you to Southwestern College and Gloria Salas for organizing this amazing event to support the community and remember those that we lost 40 years ago. United we keep their memory alive 🌹
Thank you Morgan Rogers, Area Operations Manager for giving my staff and I a tour of the International Boundary and Water Commission Facility near Tijuana River-Valley today. It was very interesting to learn more about current and future projects that will improve sanitation conditions in San Diego and Tijuana.
Today I had the pleasure of proclaiming July 16, 2024 as "John Alvarado Day" in the City of San Diego! Mr. Alvarado is the founder of the Good Neighbor Project which was created to offer hands on education, employment support, and other life skills that improve the quality of life for inner city youth. He has been a mentor for many students at San Diego Job Corps and the Sweetwater School District. Thank you for everything that you do, Congratulations!

Earlier this week, my staff and I went to Tijuana to visit the Cartelera Cultural IMAC (Instituto Municipal de Art y Cultura) and La Casa de La Cultura. The IMAC is a municipal entity of the Municipal Secretariat of Social Development (DESOM), its purpose is to be a bridge between artists and the people of Tijuana, as well as to offer spaces and cultural activities for the enjoyment of citizens. Thank you to Jesus Emmanuel Villalba Leon, Director of IMAC and your staff for giving us a tour and teaching us more about the rich history of Tijuana.
Today I had the pleasure of seeing Makeda 'Dread' Cheatom here at City Hall! Makeda is the Executive Director and Founder of the WorldBeat Cultural Center. I volunteered 20 years ago at the WorldBeat Cultural Center and they just received a 25 year lease agreement at LU&H after 30 years of being month-to-month, Congratulations!

Yesterday, I hosted the 25th Scholarship Anniversary Committee Meeting for the San Ysidro Women’s Club! We are all very excited to plan this event for 2025 and fundraise for scholarships in San Ysidro!

The Caltrans San Ysidro International Gateway Sign stands as a beacon of connection and unity. Replacing the 50+ year old "Welcome" sign, the San Ysidro International Gateway sign represents a renewed interest in beautifying our Southern border towns, and welcoming its many immigrants and visitors.
