🚨🚨🚨Unfortunately, many people around the world have been affected by domestic violence.

🔴DV is a traumatic experience that most of the time happens behind closed doors by an intimate partner or family member. Because the abuser is “family” it can be easy to overlook or justify the abuse.‼️

🔻Victims of domestic violence may experience physical and mental health problems such as depression, suicidal tendencies, panic attacks, substance abuse disorders, PTSD, etc.

♦️PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a condition that people have difficulty recovering from after experiencing or witnessing any terrifying or traumatic event, like domestic violence.

🔻No matter if the abusive relationship has ended or not. PTSD symptoms can continue long after the abuse has stopped❗️

📌It is very important to understand the psychological effects of domestic violence PTSD and to support survivors by providing safe spaces for them.

🎗️🎗️🎗️With support, they can then begin to rebuild their lives and develop healthy relationships.🫂

⁉️Every day we receive calls regarding the process to become a client at VFC.

🔷There are a variety of ways a person can find VFC, including through a referral from Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) or through the Probation and Parole Department.

🔹Many individuals come to us on a volunteer basis, needing support in their lives. Some come through word of mouth from a satisfied former client.

📌We have support groups for survivors of domestic violence and we offer anger management classes and groups to help those who have used violence in their relationships in the past.

🌈 🏳️‍🌈PRIDE MONTH🏳️‍🌈🌈

🚨The first image of Domestic violence (DV) or intimate partner violence (IPV) that comes to mind is usually a man physically harming a woman. ‼️

📌DV can occur in different ways and has long-lasting harmful effects even if the abuse wasn’t physical violence.

🔴Any person can be an abuser and any person can be a victim. IPV can occur in any relationship, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, age, etc.

🌈🌈research has shown that LGBTQ+ individuals experience IPV at equal to or higher rates compared to heterosexual, cisgender relationships.

🆘At the same time, LGBTQ+ survivors of IPV often find asking for help difficult, and when they do, find fewer specific resources.

🌈LGBTQ+ survivors may be afraid to reach out for help for some unique reasons such as fear of being denied of their LGBTQ+ identity or fear of the available resources not being inclusive and supportive of their identity.

🔻It is common for LGBTQ+ communities to gather in “safe spaces,” that are supportive of their identities and a survivor could have a higher probability of running into their abuser in these shared spaces.

🔻Sometimes they don’t recognize the behavior as abuse and survivors may be manipulated into thinking that this is “normal” in LGBTQ+ relationships.

🌈🌈The is a great opportunity for anyone to learn and be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.

ℹ️🔔Inform yourself regarding healthy or unhealthy relationships regardless of gender or sexuality.

📌Anytime someone tells you they’re experiencing IPV, believe them.

🎗️Tell them they’re not responsible for the behavior of their partner.

👉👉It is everyone’s right to ask for a help and receive support regardless of their sexual identity.🏳️‍🌈

📝 Arturo Arzola: Working on makes me realize that awareness, education, and prevention have an impact on people’s healthy choices and avoidance of adverse situations and maladaptive ways to resolve conflicts. The true reality is that there is a disparity in resources and services for many communities in health care and indeed for mental health. We cannot expect to raise healthy children if their parents might lack access to essential mental health services. Without being political, the definition of a nation is rooted in its population. Therefore, if we would like growth and prosperity for our country, it is imperative to make health care, which includes mental health services be accessible to all without discrimination of any type.

🔔🔔Social media platforms especially Tiktok and Instagram have expanded beyond their original primary use as entertainment to become a significant source of health information❗️

🔷Although these platforms have provided greater awareness and openness around mental health, they have also given rise to a culture of self-diagnosis. 🔎🤔🧐

✅Being aware about health conditions and talking about mental illness without shame or stigma is positive and important step.

🔷But there is catch… Simplified and attractive presentation of complex information about health issues, self-diagnosis without professional input has potential risks❗️

ℹ️Misinformation and oversimplification are significant concerns ❗️According to the research, TikTok’s format, by presenting brief content without capturing the complexity of medical conditions, is not only potentially leading viewers to an incorrect self-diagnosis but also may reinforce false beliefs, delay proper treatment or lead to inappropriate self-management strategies.

➕In addition, this trend can exacerbate health anxiety, with the fear of having various conditions becoming a stressor in itself.😰

✅We can still use social media platforms while following some tips that will help us to become better consumers of mental health information on these platforms and use them in a positive way.✅
