Hello Lakeshore and our larger community of friends,

We need your help to set up the Spring Auction for success. Here are ways you can help:

1. Donate your own items/time/services to auction off.

Items should be new, unused or collectibles valued at $50 or more.

Purchase a new gift card from your favorite place to shop/dine and donate it to the Lakeshore auction OR donate unused gift cards you already have.

Do you share a cabin or vacation property that stays empty most of the year? Donate a weekend to the auction.

Everyone has a talent they can put to use for Lakeshore. Volunteer your skills for a good cause! This year so far we’ve got Lakeshore parents donating their woodworking, hairstyling, and catering skills! What’s yours? We can plan a fun Lakeshore gathering around it.

Do you own or work at a local business? Maybe you can donate goods or gift certificates and we in turn can support your business.

2. The most direct way to help is to sponsor the auction with a cash donation.

We offer four levels of sponsorship: Platinum ($500+), Gold ($250+), Silver ($100+), and Contributor (up to $99).

This contribution is tax-deductible.

All sponsors will be listed in the online auction catalog and thanked in our school newsletter. The auction catalog will link to the business website and display the business logo if one is provided.

You can donate directly on 32auctions.com/lakeshore24 by clicking the green Donate button.

There are many reasons to give to Lakeshore's Annual Giving Campaign. What's yours?

For this fundraising campaign, we are asking all Lakeshore families to give what they can toward the recommended donation of $600 per child ($3.33 per school day – the cost of a cup of coffee). Lakeshore Elementary has a diverse student body whose families reflect a wide range of economic circumstances. As always, choose a donation amount that fits your family’s finances and know that every dollar makes a difference.

Your donation supports three main things at Lakeshore:

1. Enrichment Programs: our enrichment programs —Motor Perception, Studio Art, Science in the Garden, Yoga, and Capoeira — are 100% funded by the PTA through your donations. These extra programs complement teachers’ weekly curriculum and enrich our children’s experience at Lakeshore.

2. Teachers and Classrooms: each year the PTA provides all teachers with a classroom grant so that they don’t have to pay out of pocket for extra supplies or materials that they will need. A classroom set-up fund is also provided to every new teacher at Lakeshore. We want our teachers to feel supported and appreciated for taking care of our children.

3. School Events: the PTA hosts community events throughout the year. These PTA funded events and special programs breathe life into our community, adding excitement to students’ school experience and filling the years families spend at Lakeshore with meaningful friendships.

For the kids, we're keeping it fun! We will award class prizes to the Top 5 classes with the highest total amount raised and Top 5 classes with the highest percent participation. So encourage your student's class to get into the fun competitive spirit and win those prizes! Winning classes will get a class party of their teacher's choosing. For two classes, there's icing on the cake-- the class with the top total raised and the class with the top percent participation will get to toss water balloons at Mr. Hartford! (He has agreed to this and it's all in good fun). And if we meet our $100,000 goal we will have a school wide bubble dance party during school.

To celebrate our fundraising campaign along the way we have one Spirit Day Friday remaining:

10/13: School Colors Day (wear Lakeshore spirit gear or red and black to show your Lakeshore pride and hope for reaching our schoolwide AGC goal of $100k!) 😍

Thank you to Supervisor Joel Engardio for visiting our school!

Visiting Laura Palacio’s 2nd grade class at Lakeshore Elementary gave me hope for San Francisco’s future. These 7-year-olds turning 8 were incredibly astute, aware, and engaged. They already know the branches of government and had probing questions for a city supervisor.

They asked about my first law (waiving fees to help small businesses survive) and we discussed a new word: entrepreneur. Turns out many of the kids are already entrepreneurs. They create pop-up stores in class and buy/sell items with toy money earned doing class chores.

Students can buy treats from the teacher, but also have to buy replacement supplies that they lose. Now, the teacher is introducing the concept of tax and will be taxing their chore paychecks. The kids are moaning about that while learning real life lessons.

A kid asked if I could create a law to ban all the bad stuff on YouTube. Then we had a discussion about the First Amendment and freedom of speech. They are 2nd graders and they understood the concepts.

A kid asked how we can stop people from being addicted to phones, recounting the news story of the middle schooler who saved his bus from crashing because he was the only kid not buried in a phone and noticed the driver was having a medical emergency.

Read news story: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/seventh-grader-dillon-reeves-school-bus-rescue-driver-unconscious-hero-warren-michigan/

A kid said she watches the news at breakfast and doesn't like it when adults fight. She wants to see more peace.

I said my job is to help fix things so kids can feel safe. I also reminded them about the joy in our city and that we’re going to create our best San Francisco.

If you’re a teacher or parent and would like me to visit your school in the Sunset, send a message here: engardio.com/contact

I’m also happy to talk with parents at your PTA meeting.

TOMORROW 4/28: Lakeshore celebrates our second annual Elders’ Day. On Elders’ Day, we celebrate our students’ heritage, language, culture, and the people in their lives who have come before them. We encourage you to talk to your child about their ancestors, grandparents, older friends and relatives who are important in your family.
❤️🖤❤️
This year we'd like to have all students collect and share recipes as a way to share family stories (and practice how-to writing). Many children may feel the strongest connection to their elders through food. This activity allows students to share part of their family culture while targeting the how-to writing standard. Teachers will be asking students to share recipes, photographs, memories, family traditions and steps involved in making their recipe. If you haven't heard about it yet, check ParentSquare or your child's backpack.
