Hi DFES families,
I'm glad that you are noticing our new bench made from reclaimed Monterey Cypress wood! This memorial bench is in honor of Patty Ryan, an amazing special education teacher who we were lucky enough to have worked alongside at DFES. She was a longstanding educator and one of the most caring people. Her warmth was palpable and she brought light into every interaction.

The bench has been a year long project of mine that included curing, sanding, oiling, filling with epoxy and more. I will continue caring for the bench each year by adding special protective oils. Please come find me if you want to know more about the tree anatomy that is highlighted in the bench or if you want to know more about the bench making process.

It was a labor of love that we now get to enjoy while remembering the wonderful Ms. Ryan and appreciating the gifts living things can provide us even after their passing.

Please talk with your children about treating the bench with respect. Thank you!
