31st president of San José State University. A champion for students, faculty, staff & changemakers!
A friendly challenge to you, Sac State President Dr. Luke Wood, for Thursday night's football game! Go Spartans!! 🔵🟡🏈
No better way to celebrate the start of a new academic year than with our annual Flag Raising ceremony at City Hall! 🔵🟡
So pleased to be joined by our partners at the City of San José, as well as our San Jose State University Alumni Association. This event symbolizes our shared commitment to our community and the enduring spirit of Spartan Pride.
Welcome back to campus Sanjay Krishnamurthi, who also happens to be an infamous Bay Area Cricket player!
I look forward to watching you excel in your computer science studies! https://ow.ly/v7WE50SXejB
So, I was delighted to meet incoming student Sachin Syal on his show O'ChakDe, which means "Go for it!" in Punjabi. This next week he'll join our campus from Fremont — as a first-year student — in the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business at SJSU.
I'm excited to watch his continue to develop! We talked about life, education and being a college student.
Check out my interview on his podcast!

Game Changer! It’s a fresh start and a new day in downtown San Jose!
💛💛💙💙.
San Jose State University transforms historic luxury hotel into college dorms Within four months of construction, SJSU converted the south tower of the Signia by Hilton - formerly the Fairmont - into dorms for 700 students.
Spartans say: "It's Fresh!"
I say: National model for urban student residential living. Extraordinary achievement, a first in History, old days a Fairmont Hotel.
Today: Spartan Village on the Paseo de San Antonio!
Many great minds came together to make this happen, and in seven short months, ready for move in!
SJSU views San Jose housing tower as boost for students and downtown An SJSU student housing village in a landmark downtown San Jose tower is poised to create a vibrant living space and further deepen the university’s ties to the city’s urban core.
Congratulations to our University Personnel department, especially Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist Amanda Frank, for receiving the Diversity Spirit Achievement Award earlier this summer at the 2024 Annual Diversity Employment Day Career Fairs!
Their work ensures we are putting diversity in the workplace, community and higher education at the forefront of what we do, opening doors to Spartans whose experiences enrich our campus community. Thank you, Amanda, for being a fierce advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion at SJSU.
WE WON! 🎉 Huge congrats to Michael M**h and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library’s 20th Anniversary Celebration! Celebrating the selection for this year's California Library Association PRExcellence Award in the Event/Campaign category.

👏
As we continue to highlight our past Spartan Olympians, meet Paul Maruyama, a proud San José State University alum whose incredible journey in judo has inspired many! 💛💙
A student of Coach "Yosh" Uchida, Maruyama's dedication and skill in Judo led him to represent Team USA in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics alongside Spartan teammate and friend Ben Nighthorse Campbell. As a key figure in the world of judo, he not only competed but has also contributed significantly to the sport's growth and development.
His connection to is a testament to our university's legacy of excellence. We're proud to have such an accomplished athlete and role model among our Spartan alumni. 🌟
Keep calm and avocado on. Enjoyed celebrating yesterday with a refreshing, though unconventional, frozen treat from our fellow CSU campus Cal Poly Pomona!
Did you know SJSU alumnae Gwen Nguyen, ’11 Entrepreneurship, and her sister Christine founded Maven’s Creamery, which makes avocado ice cream among other flavors. They were even on Shark Tank in 2019! https://ow.ly/Gx9F50SP09s
How did you celebrate National Avocado Day?
Highlighting our past Spartan Olympians! 🔵🟡🏅
Lynn Vidali Gautschi, ’76 Kinesiology, ’77 Teaching Credential, competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, earning silver and bronze medals, respectively. Her drive and dedication were inspired by her supportive family, who encouraged her to pursue her passion.
But Vidali Gautschi's journey didn't end with her competitive career; she became a beloved coach and educator, impacting countless young lives. At San José State, she earned one of the first athletic scholarships for women and never lost a race. After retiring from a 34-year career teaching PE and coaching, she still finds joy in swimming and teaching lessons in her home pool.
"Setting kids up to be successful is one of the greatest feelings," she says. As part of SJSU's Olympic legacy and an educator in our community, Vidali Gautschi is a true example of Spartan excellence! 💙💛
With the Summer Olympics beginning this weekend, we're highlighting our Spartan Olympians! 🔵🟡🏅
Tommie Smith's legacy is one of remarkable athletic prowess and a profound social impact. Born in Clarksville, Texas, and raised in California, Smith's speed on the track earned him a place at San José State University, where he became a standout athlete. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, he won gold in the 200m, setting a world record of 19.83 seconds.
However, it was his iconic silent protest on the podium that cemented his place in history. With a bowed head and a raised, gloved fist, Smith, '69 Social Science, '05 Honorary Doctorate, along with bronze medalist John Carlos, '05 Honorary Doctorate, made a powerful statement against racial injustice and inequality. This brought global attention to the civil rights movement and highlighted the struggles faced by African Americans in the United States.
His connection to remains strong, as he became a prominent figure in the institution's rich history of activism and sports excellence. The Olympic statue on our campus reminds us of his courage and conviction. 💙💛
Highlighting our student assistants in Clark Hall on National Intern Day 🌟
To all our student assistants across campus: thank you for your commitment and passion. You bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that help make a better place for all.
Your efforts not only support our university's operations but also pave the way for your future success. Keep up the great work 👏
This morning, the California State University Board of Trustees approved our proposal to name the Spartan Athletics Center the Habbas Law Athletics Center at San José State University. We are thankful for the continued support of SJSU Athletics by Omar Habbas and Habbas & Associates.
This $3.3 million commitment over 10 years will help to ensure the center remains a first-class facility for our student-athletes. I can't wait to see the new name on the building in time for the fall sports season. Go Spartans!

✨🏛️ Honored to have participated in The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) panel discussing the critical need to expand cultural and institutional support for public service in tech.
It was a vital opportunity to share my vision of a fully developed field of public interest technology, which ranks atop the list of important steps we’re taking at . We must be responsive to the seismic changes presented by AI and similar technologies.
Given how these tools will be influenced by the workforce that develops them, our focus is ensuring the AI workforce is well-prepared to deploy them with care and a focus on their ethical use for the greater good.
San José State is a unique place to enjoy the college experience. Located in the heart of downtown, and in the middle of Silicon Valley, we’re opening up a new place for Spartans to call home this fall: Spartan Village on the Paseo!

Like many within the Spartan Community, I am saddened by the passing of SJSU alumnus Victor Garza earlier this month and appreciated the moments to learn more about him and his influence at his Celebration of Life.
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to meet Victor when he invited me to a La Raza Roundtable gathering. I personally experienced his impact and influence. Victor leaves a powerful legacy. His longstanding work is iconic in nature and will continue to have an incredible impact on us all, especially within the Latino community for generations to come.
The Garza family, including Victor’s daughter Cindy, who is a longtime employee of the Facilities Development and Operations department, are in the Spartan community’s thoughts and prayers.

Victor Garza remembered as “giant” force for human rights in Santa Clara County After a life fighting for Mexican-American communities, veterans, and human rights, Victor Garza died this morning in San Jose, leaving behind a national legacy of advocacy in his wake.
Yesterday, our Spartan community lost a legend in Yoshihiro "Yosh" Uchida. I had the pleasure of meeting with Yosh several times since I joined SJSU, and the Spartan spirit profoundly radiated from him. Through judo, he taught and trained so many of our students to be not only amazing athletes and Olympians, but also incredible people who impact the community and the world.
Yosh's impact will forever live on at SJSU. We are thankful he was a Spartan for over 75 years.

Over the past 5 years, The Silicon Valley Pain Index has unveiled the complicated realities that exist in our community -- a juxtaposition of great wealth driven by innovation with growing inequities around basic needs, sometimes just a block away from each other.
It is an important reference point about the work to be done. Thank you to the HRI for working tirelessly to ensure that SJSU and this community are moving in the right direction.
Game-changer. Breakthrough. SJSU Associate Professor Liam Stanton contributed to the collaborative effort at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that has achieved fusion ignition.
“The holy grail in all energy production is fusion energy,” says Stanton as he explained — it could mean a clean energy revolution and something like “global stability,” possibly even “freely available energy” that may allow humans to travel beyond our solar system.
