We're officially in the heart of summer, which means it's ice cream season. While I love ice cream all year, of the 1.54 billion gallons sold each year in the US, sales increase during summer by about 20%. I love ice cream so much, I needed to interview an expert on the subject and I'm re-sharing this popular episode. My guest, Amy Ettinger, wrote a book I loved called Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America. I was hardly alone in my fondness for the book. The Wall Street Journal reviewed her book, saying it was "A surprisingly serious, impressively thorough treatment of ice cream's cultural significance, fabrication, economics and history, not to mention its effect on human brain
chemistry."
Sadly, Amy died a few months ago. She courageously wrote about her impending death in the Washington Post, and her article was widely read. Also, Stanford University, where she taught writing, gave
tributes to her as well.
I'm grateful to have known Amy. And you will hear just how full of passion and life she was. I'm also confident you'll love learning from her about ice cream as much as I did. Listen in and consider buying her joyful and super fun-to-read book. Listen here or anywhere you listen to podcasts:

Happy (almost) Father’s Day! In honor of tomorrow’s celebration, I’m reposting the interview with my father, Richard Dorsay, now 85 years of age. The reason I interviewed him is he embodies an important psychological principle: learning new things and challenging throughout life. Most of us are pretty well-formed by our late 30’s and we tend to like what we like, do what we do. But challenging ourselves by new learning skills and ideas can make for a richer life. Listen in and learn the benefits of rocking the leaner’s mindset anywhere you listen to podcasts or here:

Cults are scary business. They prey on our human virtues: our loyalty, our capacity to love, and many others. While only a small percentage of people actually join cults, a large percentage of us can be swayed to forms of cult-like thinking. We can believe unfounded, erroneous and self-damaging thoughts, and we'll even double down when confronted because of brainwashing, our affiliation, and other phenomena. I'm so glad I could speak with a specialist on the topic of cults. Daniel Shaw, LCSW, is the author of a well-researched and highly regarded book relating to cults called Traumatic Narcissism, and I discovered him on a Netflix special in which he was being interviewed on cults. As we age, there are various forms of increased intelligence, deeper experiences of joy, and more profound connections in our relationships.
I’m delighted to share the wisdom of Chip Conley, an extremely successful hotelier, a former exec at Airbnb, and the founder and CEO of Modern Elder Academy, the world's first "midlife wisdom school" dedicated to career and life transitions. After completing nearly 20,000 hours in my psychologist chair, conducting over 200 podcast interviews, and reading many books, one thing has become clear to me: we humans long for connection above all else.
One small problem: what is this elusive thing called “connection” that we're all chasing? And where can we find it?
I have taken a crack at answering those questions in my forthcoming book, Super Psyched: Unleash the Power of the 4 Types of Connection and Live the Life You Love.
In it, I look at how we connect to ourselves, others, the world, and the spiritual. I also aim to guide the reader in identifying ways we tend to get distracted from connection (and how to deal with those distractions), as well as how to find our own unique connection formula.
The book will first be available for order through me in the summer, and I’ll announce it here when that starts. In October, it will be available at Amazon, Audible, and other outlets.
I’m touched and honored that my book has been endorsed by several thought leaders, as you can see on the cover, and the foreword was written by NY Times bestselling author, A.J. Jacobs.
I'm both super psyched and super relieved that it is done and I hope you'll read it!
