๐ฒBicycle Theft Prevention Tips ๐ฒ
Over the last few weeks, there has been an uptick in bicycle thefts in our area. These tips should help deter thieves from targeting your bicycle. Remember these incidents can happen anywhere, and at any time.
โ
A U-lock is preferred over a cable lock - these can easily be cut through with cable cutters or a saw.
โ
Lock your wheel and frame together.
โ
Use a bike rack (sign poles are not as secure).
โ
When possible, do not park your bike on the sidewalk or street overnight.
โ
Lock your bike in a well-lit and well-traveled area.
โ
Take photos of your bikes, and serial number.

As we approach the 4th of July, we would like to remind you of the law when it comes to discharging fireworks in Ohio.
๐ Ohioans can discharge consumer fireworks on the following dates and times:
July 3, 4, and 5, and the weekends immediately before and after (4 p.m.-11 p.m.)
๐ Consumers can discharge fireworks on their own property or on another personโs property if the owner of that property has given express permission for fireworks to be discharged.
๐ Ohioans must discharge fireworks properly
๐ Ohio Revised Code (R.C.) ยง 3743.45 (as effective July 1, 2022) and Ohio Fire Code (OFC) ยง 5626 (effective July 3, 2022) apply and can be read in their entirety via the links provided. Relevant OFC provisions outline how 1.4G consumer fireworks must be used and stored by consumers.
Some provisions in the rules include:
๐ซ No person under the age of 18 is permitted to handle or discharge fireworks.
โ
Persons under the age of 18 cannot be within 150 feet of the discharge point of aerial fireworks.
๐ซ No person can use fireworks while in possession or control of, or under the influence of, any intoxicating liquor, beer, or controlled substance. A person who violates this is guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor.
โ
Aerial devices cannot be discharged within 150 feet of spectators (this includes aerial shells, roman candles, cakes, and bottle rockets).
๐ซ Non-aerial devices cannot be discharged within 50 feet of spectators (this includes fountains, firecrackers, and ground effect devices).
โ๏ธNote: These separation distances โ for both aerial and non-aerial devices โ are increased for certain types of locations such as hospitals, schools, healthcare and residential facilities, apartment and multi-tenant buildings, military installations and railroads.
โNo person can store in excess of 125 pounds (net weight of pyrotechnic composition) of fireworks unless they have additional safety measures and safeguards in place for such storage.
โFireworks cannot be discharged indoors.
โFireworks cannot be aimed at or discharged toward any person or object (such as buildings).
โFireworks cannot be discharged on public property or private school property.
โFireworks cannot be discharged if drought conditions exist or in an area where a red flag warning is in place or other weather hazard exists.

Get to know your Perkins Township Police Officers!
Throughout the year, we will begin highlighting our officers as they reach their anniversary dates.
Today, we congratulate Cpt. Curran as he has completed his 19th full time year with the Perkins Township Police Department. Cpt. Curran supervises the patrol division, K9 program, and field training program. Cpt. Curran was originally hired by PPD part time in 2004, he became a full-time officer in 2005, was promoted to sergeant in 2016, and then promoted to captain in 2023.
Q & A session with Cpt. Curran:
Why did you want to become a police officer?
A police officer in my hometown took me under his wing when I was a teenager. He got me involved in law enforcement. I also wanted a career that involved being able to help people and serve the public.
What is your favorite part about being a police officer?
I like that there is not a set routine. Every day I am able to meet new people from different backgrounds. In addition, every day brings a new challenge.
What are some of your accomplishments while working at PPD?
I started the k9 program in 2011, and since then it has proven to be very beneficial to our township. We have gained numerous community sponsors to keep the program going, which I am extremely thankful for. I also created several annual community events such as the food drive, toy drive, diaper drive, and nursing home holiday gift drive. The success of these programs is a huge accomplishment in my eyes.
What is your favorite kind of dessert or candy?
I am not a sweets person, however the one dessert I do like is Hershey pie from Burger King. If I had to pick a favorite candy it would either be Laffy Taffy or licorice.
What do you enjoy doing in your off time?
Spending time with my family and my three German Shepherds is my favorite thing to do. I am also big into the outdoors and enjoy fishing and camping.
Fun fact- In 2018, Capt. Curran earned the Silver Star Award for successfully leading his shift during an armed home invasion that occurred in Perkins Township. Capt. Curran and his team tactically approached and apprehended one of the two armed home invasion suspects at the scene. After a short investigation the second suspect was located and taken into custody
Thank you to everyone that joined us on this beautiful evening for our first Walk with a Police Officer event! We had a great turnout and canโt wait to see everyone again on July 29th at 6:30pm!

Another special thank you to BrightView for donating one of the bikes again!
We would like to extend a big heartfelt thank you to Steven and the Everyone Has a Chance Community Fund. They recently donated 36 cases of diapers and wipes after seeing our baby supply drive going on at Walmart. The diapers were given to Erie County Childrenโs Services and Heartbeat to be used by those in need in our community. The following is the mission of the EHACCF:
โIdentifying those caught in the cracks so we may realize the potential of a future where we all succeed by helping them.
When we come to understand that the best future we can have comes at a cost of clothing, feeding, training, and educating our youth, then we come to understand the value of that future we are now prepared to participate in it.โ
Please reach out to Steven at 419-502-7770 if you would like more information on the EHACCF. Thank you again for the donation!
Get to know your Perkins Township Police Officers!
Throughout the year, we will begin highlighting our officers as they reach their anniversary dates.
Today, we congratulate Ofc. Mikey Jarrett as he has completed his 5th year with the Perkins Township Police Department. Ofc. Jarrett is a handgun instructor, patrol rife-carbine instructor, impact weapon instructor, G***k Armorer, and serves as the department coordinator for Project Lifesaver.
Q & A session with Ofc. Jarrett:
Why did you want to become a police officer?
I was never really sure if it was the path I wanted to take, but after a bit of experience working at my college campus PD, I felt this was the perfect career to challenge myself and to help keep the community safe.
Are there any good stories or memories that stick out to you over your PPD career?
There are many to be shared, but I think the best one was when Chief Donald called the officer in charge and said he had the perfect job for me. The Chief called about a snapping turtle blocking traffic on a roadway in the township. I arrived and typically the turtle would be assisted across the road, but where this turtle was located there wasn't a logical destination for it. I relocated it to a water source nearby our station. Before releasing it, I brought it into our station to show everyone. To say the least, no one else was as thrilled as I was to be giving this snapping turtle a tour in our station!
What do you enjoy doing on your off time?
Spending time with my family, fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping (obviously Ofc. Jarrett loves nature and the outdoors!)
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Mint chocolate chip
Fun fact- Although Ofc. Jarrett has a slight fear of swimming in murky water, he is SCUBA certified and has no problem diving in the ocean and swimming with sharks!
Thanks to Texas Roadhouse for dropping off rolls to our officers last week!! They were delicious!
Our Bike Rodeo winners are in! ๐ฒ
Congratulations to:

๐ Addison (20 inch girls bike)

We will be calling all of the winners today to provide pick-up instructions.
Special thank you to BrightView for donating one of the bikes again!
It is common for our officers to carry stuffed animals in their cruisers to hand out to children who may be in need of some extra comfort during scary situations. Over the past few weeks, Kay Jewelers has donated hundreds of teddy bears to this cause. Thank you to Kay and their customers for their kindness and generosity!
