The assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 dashed the hopes that many Black Americans had about America's commitment to racial equality. At the time of his death, King was considered America’s most prominent civil rights leader.
White Americans respected him more than other Black civil and human rights leaders, but his opposition to the Vietnam War infuriated many. Meanwhile, his continued insistence on nonviolent protests frustrated some Black activists.
