Helping Hands Group
Helping Hands provides non-medical care assistance to the senior community in Santa Barbara County. One day the founder had an epiphany moment.
The creation of Helping Hands derived from the founder who had a very strong desire to help his own mother with day to day fundamental living challenges. It became apparent she needed even more assistance when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer Dementia in 2009. He began attending seminars on aging and Alzheimer’s in particular, as he wanted to be sure she was living a fulfilling safe and happy life

Have you ever heard of a Care Map? It is a powerful tool that is helping families understand and maintain their "care ecosystem" - the family members, caregivers, care professionals, locations and facilities involved in a person's care. It turns out that drawing out those details on paper or using computer software is a huge step in creating a sustainable and healthy care management plan. To learn more and create your own Care Map, visit https://atlasofcaregiving.com/

We are so proud to be part of a community that shows such kindness and respect for our seniors! What a pleasure to see these SBCC students celebrating their neighbor's 94th birthday. Intergenerational connections are so beneficial for everyone involved and we love to see examples like this here in our town!
College Students Throw Birthday Party for 94-Year-old Neighbor | Edhat Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) students threw a surprise birthday party for their 94-year-old neighbor last week at the Beach City Apartment complex.
We've enjoyed sharing about seniors connecting with preschoolers and college students, and the incredible benefits of these interactions, and today we've been reminded that animals can also provide very special experiences for seniors. We are smiling as we look through these photos of residents in a care facility for the elderly as they cuddle with puppies. What a gift for the residents, and a wonderful act of kindness!
Nursing home residents visiting with 8 puppies is the purest thing you’ll see today "The second we walk in with a basket full of puppies, all that loneliness is washed away, if only for a moment."
Congratulations to Mayra Cota, who is now Helping Hands Group's first in-house LVN! We can significantly improve the quality of life for seniors by combating loneliness and isolation. Providing residents of retirement communities with opportunities to interact with young people is a creative way to do this.
In our blog, we have recently highlighted organizations that foster these intergenerational connections. First, we explored how spending time with preschoolers can have an incredible impact on the well-being of seniors (read the full blog post and watch videos here: http://helpinghg.com/preschoolers-brighten-the-lives-of-the-elderly/).
Next, we shared about programs in which college students live in facilities for the elderly, trading hours of service for reduced or free rent. (Pictured here is Onno Selbach, who lives with seniors in a facility in the Netherlands.) These mutually beneficial arrangements allow students and residents to learn from each other and build lasting relationships (read the full bog post here: http://helpinghg.com/sharing-across-generations/).
Whether someone is four years old or twenty-four, they have something to offer their elders. Learning about these programs has also reminded us of the capacity our seniors have for connecting with young people, and the importance of creating more opportunities for sharing and interacting across generations.
We had so much fun meeting people at the 2017 Senior Expo earlier this month! Here are office manager Laurel, executive care manager Marcos, and public relations manager Emily at our booth. 😁
Please join us in congratulating our caregiver Christina Duran on her new role as Medication Manager! Christina has been with us for over four years and is continuing to thrive and grow along with Helping Hands. What Christina enjoys most about her job is “a sense of giving back in some way, seeing the challenges that you’re going to face when you’re that age, and it’s rewarding when people appreciate you.”
Read our full blog post about Christina at http://helpinghg.com/caregiver-spotlight-christina-duran/
A commitment to helping others is what drives Christina in her work, and we admire her dedication to being of service. We are so proud to support her in her journey and career path and to call her part of the Helping Hands team! Please join us in congratulating her on her new position and recognizing the excellent work she does each day at Helping Hands.
Can you imagine a retirement facility combined with a preschool? Does the idea seem odd? If you stop to think about the special bond that many grandparents and grandchildren have, it may not seem so strange. This video tells the story of just such a program, and the wonderful results. https://www.facebook.com/Channel4/videos/10154579081942330/
There is still no cure for dementia, but new therapies are constantly being developed. The BikeAround system uses a stationary bike and Google Street View to allow those with dementia to take a virtual ride down memory lane and revisit locations that are meaningful to them. This video shows how this unique combination of movement and visual stimulation can benefit those suffering from dementia. The look of joy on their faces is priceless. https://www.google.com/about/stories/bike-around/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid-media&utm_campaign=paidsearchon35s&dclid=CIqxrtTK9dYCFYYyaQodPWsApg
Meet the researcher using Google Street View to help dementia patients with memory loss | Google In 2007, Google sent out the first fleet of cars to map the world. Who could have guessed that a decade later, a researcher would use Street View technology to help dementia patients remember.
Sometimes we may forget that seniors who are retired and have more free time are making a huge difference in the world. This man with a big heart is a reminder of the volunteer service our seniors are providing in various ways--and what a beautiful story of unconditional love across generations.
Moving to a new home can be stressful for all of us, but for an elderly person, moving can actually be dangerous to their health and possibly even fatal. We urge you to educate yourself about this serious issue and read more about the dangers of what is known as transfer trauma and relocation stress syndrome in our latest blog post.
