Have you ever wondered if your hearing influences your taste buds?
The connection between hearing and taste lies in what’s called cross-modal perception. This is when two or more senses are involved in how you perceive an experience, like eating. Studies suggest that background noise or specific sounds can enhance or diminish certain taste sensations!
At Santa Clarita Hearing Center, we specialize in the evaluation and treatment of all types of hearing loss!

Did you know?
Your sense of hearing depends on tiny hairs deep inside your ear. If you lose these hairs, you lose your hearing!
These hair-like structures are called stereocilia, and they bend in response to sound. If hair cells are damaged in any way, we suffer permanent hearing loss or balance degeneration. Prevent this by avoiding loud noises for prolonged amounts of time!

Protect your ears!
When you leave your ears wet inside, the moisture can trap bacteria that may be harmful to your ears, causing an infection. It’s important to always dry your ears when they get wet.
If you feel water in your ears, tilt your head toward that side and gently shake the earlobe to get rid of the water. If you are a swimmer, then custom earplugs are a great solution!

Which part of the ear helps with equilibrium and balance?
ANSWER: b. Vestibular system
The organs of balance in the inner ear are called the vestibular system. This system includes three fluid-filled loops (semi-circular canals) which respond to the rotation of the head. Near the semicircular canals are the utricle and saccule which detect gravity and back-and-forth motion.

Typically, the first part of hearing to fade with age is the ability to discern high-frequency sounds. In speech, those are consonant sounds and digraphs, like “ch” and “sh".
When you can hear vowels but not consonants, it sounds like people aren't speaking clearly.
If you notice you are becoming frustrated when trying to understand people, it may be time for a hearing examination. Call Santa Clarita Hearing Center today!

Are there different types of hearing loss?
There are 3 main types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed.
• Conductive hearing loss happens when sounds cannot get through the outer and middle ear.
• Sensorineural is the most common type of permanent hearing loss. It occurs when there is damage to the inner ear.
• Mixed hearing loss refers to damage in the outer or middle ear and in the inner ear or nerve pathway to the brain.

How should you clean earwax from your ears? DON’T!
Most people have no idea how much earwax is in their outer ear canal, let alone the exact location. Trying to clear the earwax yourself can lead to many negative side effects.
However, if you have a trusted person to help you with the process—like an audiologist—you can successfully and safely remove earwax build up. For tips on cleaning your ears visit: https://hubs.ly/Q02jfY640

Many patients ask me if there’s a procedure to repair hearing loss. My reply is….not yet, but we’re closer closer everyday.
In October, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia performed the first gene therapy procedure to treat genetic hearing loss in the United States. The patient was born deaf, and now, four months later, his hearing has improved in the treated ear to a mild-moderate hearing loss.

A newborn’s eardrum is the same size as an adult’s—which is roughly the size of a dime.
It is approximately 0.1 mm thick, 8 to 10 mm in diameter, and has a mass weight of around 14 mg. Despite this diminutive size and mass, the tympanic membrane is extremely tough and flexible, and difficult to damage.

Today is a special day here at Santa Clarita Hearing Center.
On February 1, 2020, I received the keys to the office that would become my second home. In the past 4 years, I've been blessed with being able to come to work everyday and do what I love to do.
Thanks to the amazing Santa Clarita community, we've helped so many people hear better, communicate more effectively and live better lives.
And a big thank you Entheos and Hearing the Call! A portion of every single hearing aid purchased at Santa Clarita Hearing Center is donated to Hearing the Call. So if you've visited our office and been fit with hearing aids....thank you!
Thank you to everyone who has helped make my dream come true. I hope that Santa Clarita Hearing Center will continue to thrive and bring better hearing and better living to those in the the Santa Clarita Valley and all the surrounding communities.

Fun Fact! The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the ambient noise that's produced when the air entering the seashell bounces about in the hollow cavity of the seashell. The hard, curved surfaces inside shells reflect soundwaves, causing the waves to "bounce around" inside the shell. The shell acts as a resonator, boosting certain sound frequencies, so that they are louder than they would be without the seashell placed next to your ear.
You can get the same effect using a cupped hand, small glass, or bowl placed next to your ear!

Feedback refers to the distracting whistling or high ringing sound that sometimes happens to hearing aid wearers. Feedback management means that a hearing aid is equipped with an advanced system to reduce occurrences of feedback.
Acoustic feedback occurs when the amplified sound from a receiver re-enters the amplification system through the microphone and is amplified again. While most feedback tends to sound like a whistling, the actual sound can vary from a hum to a piercing screech.
Most current hearing aid technology offers a feedback management system that makes whistling a thing of the past. The system is typically run during the initial fitting process or any time a modification/repair is complete.

Will I need a hearing aid for both ears if I only have loss in one?
Although you may be tempted to save money and only purchase one hearing aid, by using two hearing aids, you can take better advantage of the way the brain processes sound through what’s known as binaural hearing. If you are wearing just one hearing aid, the brain can have trouble distinguishing background noise from voices and identifying locations of particular sounds. Wearing hearing aids in both ears enhances the hearing process because the hearing aids communicate with each other and transfer data back and forth, rather than working independently to try and process sound.
Don’t sacrifice your hearing! At Santa Clarita Hearing Center, we’ll find the solution that works best for you and your budget!

Wow! We are so humbled our patients share such kind words from their experience here at Santa Clarita Hearing Center! Thank you so much!
New to wearing hearing aids?
Just as your hearing aids adjust to the world around you, your brain will begin to adapt to the hearing aids. While you are familiarizing yourself with the many acoustic stimuli around you, your brain will in time re-learn how to suppress background noise and focus on important sounds. Be patient. After a few weeks or months, you won’t even notice that you’re wearing a hearing aid.
