Presentation: "Hunting for hazardous asteroids using infrared light" by guest speaker Dr. Joseph Masiero
Near-Earth asteroids provide us the opportunity to better understand the formation and evolution of the Solar system, yet they also pose a hazard to the Earth should they be on an impacting trajectory.

In his talk, Dr. Maserio will discuss a survey to discover and characterize hazardous asteroids using the NEOWISE infrared space telescope, and what his team has learned about our Solar system. He will also present their plans for the next-generation mission: NEO Surveyor.

Dr. Joseph Masiero is a research scientist at the IPAC research organization at Caltech, and the Deputy PI of the NEOWISE mission. His research focuses on studying the physical and dynamical properties of asteroids using a range of techniques including photometry, polarimetry, and numerical simulations. Joe received his BS in Astronomy & Astrophysics from Penn State, and his PhD in Astronomy from the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii.

Please join us for this special presentation.

"The Thirty Meter Telescope"

The Thirty Meter Telescope (often referred to as the TMT) is an extremely large telescope (ELT) project planned for installation in Mauna Kea. Hawaii. Incorporating 492 individual mirror segments, the telescope would use adaptive optics to provide clear images of astronomical objects in the near-ultraviolet and mid-infrared. Planned by a team of scientists at the University of California at Santa Cruz and Caltech, the project had started construction but was halted in 2014 due to environmental concerns. In this presentation, we'll get an update on the latest news and status of the TMT.

7:00 PM Presentation: "The Zwicky Transient Facility"

We are very fortunate to have a guest presenter from IPAC, Dr. Benjamin Rusholme. Dr. Rusholme will tell us about the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a large modern camera on the historic Palomar Schmidt telescope. Its wide-field of view and fast readout allows the entire Northern sky to be scanned every two days.

ZTF searches for transient phenomena such as supernovae, tidal-disruption events, stellar variability (including rapidly-rotating binaries), comets, and asteroids.

Dr. Rusholme grew up in London, UK, where he was lucky to see the Moon due to cloud and light pollution. Too tall to be an astronaut, he built telescopes to study the Cosmic Microwave Background (the heat left from the Big Bang). One telescope was located at the South Pole, to which he deployed four times. He then specialized in data analysis for larger and longer missions, including space telescopes.

This will include 1) describing the hardware (telescopes, mounts, cameras, etc.) used, 2) the techniques and software for capturing the images, and 3) the post-processing (more software) needed to get the final image.
In addition to discussing the process for imaging Saturn, techniques for capturing images of other solar system objects will be shown, including Jupiter, the Earth’s moon, sunspots, comet Neowise, and meteors.

7:00 PM Presentation: "Do You See What I See" Christine Coleman

One of the challenges that we amateur astronomers can encounter when viewing the night skies, is the considerable differences in seeing conditions that can occur, particularly when viewing in different physical locations. This can occur due to variations in ambient light conditions, weather shifts, air quality, and other factors. That's why it's not unusual to feel "lost" when stargazing in a dark sky location where many more stars and deep sky objects are visible, compared to a local area (such as our backyards!)

Christine will provide us with some tips for addressing this challenge, including sky-hopping techniques to help locate night sky objects of interest, having an understanding of the brightness and magnitude scales for night sky objects, and the Bortle sky scale for comparing viewing conditions. She'll also explain the benefit of taking a wide-angle shot for the planning viewing sky area to help discover the constellations.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

We’ll enjoy two interesting presentations at this month’s club meeting!

“Planck’s Law and Star Power” by Jim Moldenhauer

In his presentation, Jim will discuss:

1. How the radiation spectral intensity distribution at a star’s surface can be determined by Planck’s law given the star’s surface temperature.
2. How the spectral intensity distribution can then be used to determine the star’s total radiation output as well as its output in the visible range.
3. How the power output can be converted from power units to number of photons being generated per second.
4. How the radiation intensity at the star’s surface can be converted into down-stream intensity levels at the viewer’s position.

“The Night Sky of Fall” – Dave Flynn and Christine Coleman

For this month's club program, Local Group club members Christine Coleman and Dave Flynn will present how you can fully enjoy viewing the interesting constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects in the night skies of fall.

7:00 PM Presentation: "Objects and Images in Astronomy" by Jim Moldenhauer

When viewing objects in the night sky and/or capturing images of such objects for astrophotography, there are various factors that can impact the quality of the imaging: size, distance, brightness, and atmospheric conditions are just a few of these elements. For this month's club program, Local Group member Jim Moldenhauer will explain these key factors to consider and how to address them to optimize your viewing or possibly, image capture for astrophotography.

This session will review the topics Jim presented in the July club meeting presentation and share additional viewing factors and how to address them.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!
