Happy Chanukah night # 4!
Today, half the menorah is lit while the other half is still dark.
Maimonides writes: Always view yourself as evenly balanced on a scale, and the world as evenly balanced. Do one good act and you have tipped the balance - for yourself and the world entire, and brought about salvation for all.
Tonight is like that. Light and dark, good and evil. It's all tied up, waiting for our choices to come.
But there's a hack. King Solomon declared: One opposite the other did the L-rd create. The balance is intentional. But when we try to do the right thing, we get a little extra assistance from above. It only seems equal. But when we do our part to tip the scales, it turns out that the side of good had the advantage all along.
And that's the shamash - the helper candle. It only looks like the menorah is half and half tonight, but really light always has a little extra boost.
Tip the scales! Light the menorah tonight.
