Congratulations to SMC alum Una Aleksic, who graduated in Spring 2024 and transferred to Columbia University with a major in Psychology! 🎉

“I moved to California in 2016 for studies at SMC and I stayed for two years until I moved back to Sweden in 2018 to gain some working experience. After five years in Sweden, I decided to quit my job and go back to SMC to finish my associate degree and prepare for a transfer. It was my chance to do what I actually wanted.”

“SMC exceeded my expectations in many ways but mostly because it provided a space where I could learn, grow safely both as a student and individual. I loved my three years at SMC and there are many memories, people and professors that I will remember fondly.”

“Knowing that my goal was to transfer, SMC helped me prepare and plan for this from day one. International counseling center, college fairs and other resources and events helped me figure out how to go through with my application and showed me the opportunities that I had.”

“I enjoyed so many of my classes at SMC. I took three history classes with Professor Christopher Stiles during my first two years; I truly loved his way of teaching and his passion for history. I would also like to give a special thanks to Dr. Colin Smith-Clark who helped me grow my interest in research in psychology. Last but definitely not least, Professor Julie Chekroun. Julie provides a safe space for her students and truly cares about them not only succeeding but also thriving. I can't thank her enough for this.”

Una encourages you to “Go for it, one step at a time! Don't let fear stop you from trying. “

We have an impressive academic record. We are the leader among the state's 110 community colleges in transferring students to the University of California, University of Southern California and other four-year campuses.

We also pride ourselves on preparing students for careers of the 21st century, in emerging fields like interaction design, cloud computing, technical theatre, and global trade and logistics. In addition, the 110+ career-focused degrees and certificates we offer encompass traditional fields like nursing, early childhood education/teacher training, film production and so many more.

Santa Monica College is one of the most affordable institutions of higher education in the world. Tuition is only $26 a unit for California residents. And we have an active Financial Aid office that will help you get the funds you need to pay for your college education.
