๐ There are two kinds of common scams that randomly arrive in student email accounts:
1. "job opportunity" emails are always phishing scams. SMC never advertises jobs through email messages. The SMC Career Services Center only advertises legitimate job opportunities using an outside vendor through a web-based HireSMC service at: www.smc.edu/hiresmc
2. "account/storage termination" are phishing scams. The College NEVER requires students to click a link or fill out a webform to keep any student online service (email or anything else) active. If a former student's online services are going to be terminated after the grace period, the former student must submit a new admission application. The grace period information is online at: www.tinyurl.com/student-it-help
Do not engage in any way with scammers. Do not give them money, gift card numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or any other information. It is highly unlikely that they have accessed any we**am, even if they claim to have done so. (They are criminals, and criminals lie.)
If a scammer ever makes any threats of violence or attempt to extort money from you, immediately contact your local police agency or get advice in person from the SMC Police Department at the station on Pearl Street. (The SMC police station staff will call a police officer to the station to meet with you if appropriate.) Your local police agency where you live has jurisdiction over this kind of crime.
If you ever receive an unrequested envelope or package in postal mail or from a delivery service, that unsolicited mail may also be from a scammer, This happened a few years ago to SMC students who gave their home address to email phishing scammers. Scams preโdate the internet and email.
SMC recommends that students run personal anti-malware scans every so often on on the student's personally-owned devices. Most people run full scans overnight since scans slow the device down. Most scam emails do not carry malware anymore, but an anti-malware scan every so often is a good idea.
If you ever click on a link in a phishing email, please close and delete the email and then change your SMC password immediately.
