As we await the much anticipated Auditions for Well let’s get to know the director, Mathew Moross and why he chose to direct, WELL.

SCP: Why WELL?

MM: Might be because Lisa Kron, (author of the book to the award winning musical FUN HOME) has written an extremely funny, warm and odd little play that asks some rather serious questions. On the surface, the play appears to be a play about the relationship between the playwright and her mom, but there is a lot more that Kron wants to explore. What makes some people recover from an illness and other people not? How does our past affect our present and how will it - if we remember it incorrectly - screw up or enrich our future? Where can one find grace? Why do some people understand empathy and others merely skate through life with no concept of other people’s existence? These questions sounds deep and dark, but Kron answers them – or tries to – with humility in a highly theatrical, original and humorous way.

That being said, WELL is a tremendously difficult play to describe – it’s a play to experience. I am happy to be back at The Playhouse directing an area premiere by an important voice in the modern American theater.
