Inspo Weekend Part 3: Apricot Hotel, Hanoi, Vietnam

After meeting the owner almost 10 years ago, we’ve been fans of the Apricot Hotel, located steps from Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi. This French colonial style boutique hotel boasts 5 star amenities, but what drew us to this property is the art.

The owner is an avid art collector of Vietnamese artwork and every single art piece hung in the hotel was curated from his personal collection, including some rare pieces. Additionally the ownership group has two art galleries in Hanoi that are connected with the featured art, so if you are ever in Hanoi, swing by the hotel and take a look at the hung art and ask for more information on the galleries.

Inspo Weekend Part 2: MA Architects Office, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

What we love about this design is the intentional usage of local materials to adjust and solve the needs of the company.

MA Architects looked for a new work space for their team in the urban environment of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Overhead, the trusses that support the roof are made entirely of timber covered by transparent corrugated roofing materials for best indoor lighting. Where appropriate, sections of the roof are protected by dry coconut fiber coverings for insulation from the sun’s harsh glare.

When it rains it pours in this region, the architect designed the building to be fully plastered. The hard and smooth surface protects the building from extreme heat and wet weather all year round. Although relatively small in size, the office interior crafted of wood is impressive thanks to an open-concept, well-ventilated layout.

Besides light and wind, the architect also integrated other elements of nature in the design, among them earthen floors that cover parts of the ground level. Only the workspace and kitchen floors are made of concrete slabs for ease of use and safety.

Inspo Weekend: Brick Cave, Hanoi, Vietnam

Designed by Vietnamese architect firm, H&P Architects, this 2 bedroom perforated brick house was designed to make its residents feel like they are close to nature while being in an urban environment.

According to H&P Architects, the house is enclosed by two brick wall layers that meet each other at steep angles. These are dotted with both small and large openings, to allow both light and air to pe*****te the building. The two layers also act as a filter to keep bright sunshine, dust and noise out of the main living spaces while still allowing the elements – light, wind and rain – into other areas.

Lightning strikes twice.

Never would have thought we can acquire another early Eames Rosewood FSW-6 screen, but here we are. Originally mistaken as the 1992 limited edition rosewood screen, however this screen has the beige fabric connector, indicating that it is the earlier edition.

And yes, this is full height, 68 inches.

Inspo Sunday: Under (restaurant), Lindesnes, Norway, 2019

Get ready to add this to your travel bucket list - Europe’s first underwater restaurant.

In Norwegian, “under” has the dual meaning of ”below” and ”wonder.” The Snøhetta-designed restaurant also functions as a research center for marine life, providing a tribute to the wild fauna of the sea and to the rocky coastline of Norway’s southern tip. The restaurant welcomes research teams studying marine biology and fish behavior, through cameras and other measurement tools that are installed on and outside the facade of the restaurant. The researchers’ aim is to document the population, behavior and diversity of species that are living around the restaurant, through cameras and live observation.

As for the furniture, the architect company worked with local carpentry workshop, Hamran, to design a furniture series exclusively for the restaurant, with a chair as the central artifact. The chair is designed as one continuous form that and mimics the way that the branches naturally progress from the tree stem in the angled corners.

This is a vintage Isamu Noguchi Akari floor lamp, model BB3-50EN, circa 1960s. Bamboo and enameled steel with a paper shade. The paper shade is newer and is in excellent condition for its age, with minimal wear and tears, no holes.

Repeat Saturday Series: George Nelson Thin Edge Rosewood Credenza

This is a rare Thin Edge credenza/cabinet in Rosewood from 1955 that has several custom features including a cork-lined pull out for glassware, slits for cookie sheet storage, a pull out butcher's block cutting board, double utensil drawers and custom solid metal legs to accommodate the 80 inch length. Applied foil manufacturer's label to drawer "George Nelson Design Herman Miller."
