It was a shock to us, even though we had other family members with T1D. My brother-in-law, Arlan, was diagnosed in 1971 in his 20s, and his son, my nephew, Jared, in 1991 when he was 15. But we were deluded to think than any family connection was on my brother-in-law’s side, and that we were safe.
