University of Washington Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency
The Division of Plastic Surgery is committed to the development of surgical skills of residents and faculty.
We strive for an exciting environment that fosters the intellectual development of students, residents, fellows and practicing physicians alike.
It’s not summertime without our annual “Bash on Vashon” program-wide outing! Every year, Dr. Friedrich invites us to spend the day in his beautiful home on Vashon Island, where we bask in the sun and enjoy some backyard games all together. This year, the event was particularly unique - featuring a birthday celebration for Dr. Friedrich and chief resident Dr. Beck, megaphone announcements by Dr. Vedder, and the babies of UW PRS! If you look carefully, you can even spot a gifted shirt with Dr. Friedrich’s favorite radiographic finding, the “pooping duck sign” 🤭
Happy belated birthdays to our doctors and thank you to all for making our program as special as it is 🫶🏼
The very first intern bootcamp was a success! 🥾⛺️
Our incredibly enthusiastic, talented, and hardworking .and.perfused squad is now even MORE prepared to splint, suture, and doctor any patient that comes their way! 💪💫
Special thanks to program director Dr. Russell Ettinger, Dr. Jeffrey Friedrich, and upper level residents for lending their knowledge and skills to this fantastic series of lectures and hands-on workshops! 🧠📚💉
Oh, and we can’t forget to thank the gal who always keeps us fed, caffeinated, and on task, . 🥰
Shout out to PGY5 Dr. Shanique Martin and faculty Dr. Duane Wang for hosting an exceptional summer journal club for our faculty, residents, and visiting students!☀️
We had so much fun reviewing recent publications in breast, hand, and peripheral nerve, and discussing how these data can translate into our own clinical practice. 📚🔬✋
…the complimentary Thai food was just a bonus. 😋
Congratulations are in order for Drs. Benjamin Massenburg, Ezgi Mercan, Russell Ettinger, and Raymond Tse, whose publication “The Yin and Yang of Primary Unilateral Cleft Lip and Nose Repair: Balance through Opposing Cleft and Noncleft Side Changes” has been named the 2024 PRS Best Paper for Pediatric/Craniofacial.🥇
This award is given annually by the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the most important and widely read journal in Plastic Surgery. This is the team’s third(!) “Best Paper” award in four years and reaffirms that the Craniofacial Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital is a leader worldwide. The Craniofacial Team cares for children with cleft and craniofacial conditions and is one of the largest and most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams. While the award is an honor, the greatest honor for the team is in serving children and families with cleft and craniofacial conditions.
Sundays are for 🍻 with friends (and our unofficial mascot, Monty 🐾).
Congratulations to our 2024 UW Plastic Surgery residency graduates: Drs. Rebecca DeSanti, Vanessa Leonhard, John Shih, and Phil Tolley (fondly know as the )!
The UW PRS Family gathered at the Seattle Yacht Club last weekend to celebrate our Chief Residents’ accomplishments as clinicians, researchers, and just as really awesome people. We are certain they will continue to go above and beyond for their patients and colleagues, as they have done during their 6 years in Seattle.
It is with immense pride, much laughter, and many tears that we send them off to their respective fellowships and jobs! ✈️
🌟Dr. Rebecca DeSanti ➡️ Microsurgery Fellowship (Memorial Sloan Kettering | New York, NY) 🔬
🌟Dr. Vanessa Leonhard ➡️ Private Practice (Physicians Clinic of Iowa | Cedar Rapids, IA)
🌟Dr. John Shih ➡️ Private Practice (Kaiser Permanente | Oakland, CA)
🌟Dr. Phil Tolley ➡️ Craniofacial Fellowship (University of Pennsylvania | Philadelphia, PA)
We also celebrated our wonderful graduating fellows, Drs. Erin Anstadt, Andrew Linkugel, and Mustafa Chopan. We wish you each the best as you embark into practice!✨
As our graduating Chiefs wrap up their last few days of residency, we can’t help but get a little teary-eyed thinking about the last five years our classes have spent together.
John, Phil, Rebecca, and Vanessa welcomed each of us to UW with open arms. They taught us how to reduce and splint fractures, checked in on us during challenging rotations, walked us through chest tubes and complex flap dissections, hosted us on holidays when our families were far away, and always told us it was going to be okay. They have made an indelible impact on who we each are as clinicians, and as people. And we couldn’t be more grateful to know each of them, their partners, and their children.
We’ll miss you four more than you could know. But it’s not goodbye, it’s just see ya later 🥹

Our residents had a blast learning about craniomaxillofacial fixation and practicing their plating technique during our weekly didactics! Thank you to for sponsoring our skills lab, and to all our attendings for showing us the ropes and making sure our practice skulls received the care they needed 💀 As they say, practice makes perfect!
🎊We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our very own Dr. Danielle Eble has matched to OHSU for Gender-Affirming Fellowship!! 🎊

This weekend, UW PRS faculty and residents and represented our program at the Latino Surgical Society national symposium, hosted right here in Seattle by ! We had an amazing time teaching suturing to students from the .amistad.school, meeting Latino surgeons and trainees from across the country, and collaborating on how to improve care for under resourced populations! Big thanks to for bringing us together, and to current and emeritus UW Surgery chairs Dr. Wood and Dr. Pellegrini for your support.

This weekend we celebrated Dr. Phil Tolley and his amazing wife, Elisse, who are welcoming their third child - a baby girl - in March! 🎀🐣
Big brothers Braxton and Jordan are just as excited we are! 🤗 And our special guest, Baby Kai Shih, also showed his enthusiasm with a long nap. 😴
As if this day wasn’t special enough, it was also Phil’s birthday, so you know made a 🔥 birthday cake in his honor.
Achieving a work-life balance can be a slippery slope, but I think we’ve got it figured out. ⛷️🤙
