In the spirit of the debate tonight I bring you Fogue artist Chris Villiers "Three Flags" Series, 1-3.
It started as a whisper in the summer and reached a crescendo on January 6th. Faces on TV, voices on the radio, newspaper columnists, friends on the internet all proclaiming: “That’s not who we are.” While I sincerely believe that’s not who we aspire to be, when I look at history – from the rudimentary Xs forcing people to give up their land, to poll taxes and mass incarceration – I question that statement.
Three Flags was conceived as a series of still-life images using different types of distressed film (Ilford HP5 soaked in alcohol and lemon juice after exposure, expired Kodak Tri-X 400 soaked prior to exposure and Kodak Ektachrome 100 rubbed in salt and sandpaper). The negatives were scanned, digitally edited, combined with news clips and other documents, then printed on 100 percent cotton rag paper.
HUGE Thank you to Nancy Guppy for the shout out for Seattle Recycled Arts now in their 8th year and Fogue Studios & Gallery 5th year of hosting! Opening July 13 during Georgetown Art Attack 5-9pm
