Trigger Warning: fat & weight stigma, misogyny
This afternoon I watched an episode of Kevin Can F Himself on Netflix and 2 thoughts kept popping up.
1. How often male leads and nextdoor neighbors are cast in fat bodies but not the lead female role.
2. That living room has got to be the same set as Mama’s Family & Everybody Loves Raymond.
Content warning: Rant on insurance billing and finding in-network providers.
Finding in-network providers, usually in mental health fields is increasingly difficult. In the last few years I have seen even more medical specialists like neurologists, dietitians and primary care leave insurance all together in favor of private pay.
This article explains some of the main reasons why providers are no longer taking insurance.
What it doesn’t say is that insurance companies are taking steps to initiate a new provider reimbursement plan based on how effective the treatment progress is. If they deem a client is not progressing according to what they think it should be (based on a made up definition that is not all rooted in reality) they will just stop paying for appointments or doc the providers pay by a percentage. Providers in WA state were mailed and emailed notifications on this in fall of 2023 but no start date of was given.
Currently mental health providers in WA state are leaving Regence insurance in a mass exodus. I suspect even more providers will be doing so in the next few years. 😔
This explains it!

Anyone else sing this song in their childhood? Singing French, Cajun & Creole nursery rhymes are attached to some of my most treasured experiences growing up which almost always included shared meals with extended family.
Alouette is one of these songs. Today this post reminded me that though we are often far removed from not just from the origins of our food sources and perhaps also the ancestors who gave us a sense of belonging and love through shared meals, a simple song can bring it all back in an instant.

A long time ago it was common to eat larks and plucking a bird would have been a very normalized and everyday experience. Theres something lovely about singing to y...

Sometimes as a dietitian I can have a good sense of where someone's biologically appropriate weight range is (also called set point range, and sometimes "healthy weight" but I don't love that). For example, if I'm working with an adolescent who has always been tracking along the same percentile on their growth chart, their biologically appropriate weight is probably around that same percentile, plus a little higher because buffer room is a good thing! But most of the time, where one's weight will settle is not a thing we can accurately predict or promise.
One thing I do know? If you are starving yourself, engaging in excessive exercise or other disordered eating behaviors to get to a certain weight or maintain it, it's almost certainly not in your biologically appropriate weight range.
There are over 100 different factors that can influence weight. Food is just one of them. Weight science is endlessly complex, but sometimes it's simple. If your body is fighting against attempts for you to be a certain size, then it's probably for a good reason.

5 Steps to Teaching Kids How to Be Angry
Teaching Your Child How To Be Mad It’s not about teaching our children not to be mad, sad, or frustrated. It’s about teaching them how to be mad, sad, and frustrated. Rather than teaching them to suppress or bottle their emotions, we can empower our children to move through them in healthy ways. Here's how.

It’s so easy.
The belief that “if you start…feeling…crying…eating…screaming, you won’t stop” is a Mistaken Belief you learned at some point as a trauma survival skill.
It is no longer helpful or needed and is keeping you in fear when your entire being is longing for safety.

Trigger/content warning: eating disorder, starvation, genocide, politics
I have worked in the eating disorder field since 2006 helping people recover from all manner of starvation.
I have witnessed and know intimately the long term impacts of starvation and malnutrition even if only experienced for short moments. And yet the level of horror the people of Gaza and Congo are forced to experience is beyond my comprehension.
Even if it all stopped right now and the abundance of food that has been waiting at Egypt’s border is allowed in, the risk of death from refeeding is just as great as continued starvation if specialized medical care is not offered simultaneously.
The level of grief and helplessness is difficult to bear at times. Calls to action fall on deaf ears because greed for oil and money and control of power are perceived as more valuable to our elected officials than human life.
As Americans whose tax dollars are funding free healthcare, free education and a billion dollar war for now named terrorist organization, we need to take to heart that it’s an election year.
I hope everyone eligible to vote actually votes and chooses candidates not solely based on their party loyalty or religious values, but by their actions towards underrepresented and marginalized communities, by the level of inner work the candidate has done to challenge their own internalized racism and their refusal to participate in financial greed during the election process and while holding office. The system is broken and attempts at working within the system are not working. If we want to change the system we need to change who we elect into positions of power.
Almost every poll shows American people are aligned with our values on healthcare, financial security, education and much more. Yet the system has mastered how to divide us, other us, dehumanize us.
If your candidate isn’t on the ballot-write them in. Our collective power is greater than what we give up to our “leaders.”
