"Imagining" by Joan Wortis
Monotype collage on panel (framed)
29.5 x 22.5 in

In her work, Vashon artist Joan Wortis draws inspiration from found materials, finding beauty in the elegant lines of calligraphy from antique books or the unique texture of textile remnants. With a keen eye for design and a playful spirit, Wortis transforms these 'found forms' into visual artworks, exploring how different qualities of line become imbued with meaning.

🖼 "Sargasso Sea" by Caryn Friedlander
Oil on canvas (triptych)
72 x 90 inches

🖌 "I find it mysterious and wonderful that a single line can be filled with so much emotive potential," says Bellingham artist Caryn Friedlander. Friedlander applies oil paint in thin layers, building up color, structure, and texture to find direction as each painting develops. She uses small brushes to build a painting from a multitude of brushstrokes, which slows her work so she has time to observe a painting’s development.

🎨 Born in New York City, Friedlander earned her MA in Japanese art history (University of Washington, 1987), and an MFA in painting and drawing (University of Washington, 1991). Along with her studio work, Friedlander taught drawing and painting at Whatcom Community College (Bellingham, WA) from 1992 until 2015, when she retired from teaching to focus solely on her studio work.

🖼 "Sampad (A Falling Together)" by Donald Cole
Acrylic on canvas
36 x 50 in

🎨 For Vashon Island artist Donald Cole "the appearance and the content of my work comes from several sources: the joy of painting and creating, and my own social, psychological and ethical responses to the world as I live and view it." Inspired by the angular forms of Sanskrit and the rounder forms of Malayalam (the language of Kerala) that he saw while traveling through India, Cole created texts of his own design. In this painting, Cole has created shapes that mimic language, but whose meanings lie somewhere in the emotive qualities of the painting itself.

🖼 "Grey Shift No. 3" by William Song
Oil on canvas
24 x 30 in

🎨 William Song’s passion for painting emerges from the unusual arc of his life in seemingly divergent realms. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Song became a nationally recognized lawyer, but a rare medical condition forced a shift in his life. Song’s journey toward healing lead him to re-focus on his lifelong love of painting and he began exploring the ways that his art could affect environments and the people within them. Grounded in research about the capacity of visual information to effect change in the mind and body, Song's paintings are energetic portals attuned to express connection, contemplation, spontaneity, and freedom.

🖼 "22. Thirsty: The Habits of a Phnom Penh Fabric Seller" by Lauren Iida Studio
Hand-cut paper, watercolor and ink
22 x 17 in

🎨 This piece is from Iida's series, "32 Aspects of Daily Life," in which she depicts female-identifying people that she connected with when she lived in Cambodia. In this series, Iida pays homage to a series of the same name, created in the 1880s by Japanese woodblock artist, Tsukioka Yosh*toshi (1839-1892). Much of Iida's work is influenced by Cambodia, where she lived for 13 years; her family's Japanese American heritage and their incarceration during WWII; and her experience becoming a mother.

🖼 Lauren Iida was born in Seattle, Washington and holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts. Iida specializes in intricately hand-cut paper, often incorporating watercolor, ink wash and shadow play. Iida's work has been exhibited internationally and at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest, Galerie Lee (Paris), King Street Station (Seattle), the Mayor’s Gallery at Seattle City Hall, and Tacoma Spaceworks.

"I lived in the Pacific Northwest from 1982 to 2022. With this being my first solo exhibit since I moved away, I wanted to give a nod to the place that gave me the opportunity to begin my life as a visual artist. Though the themes are universal, and the images will be interpreted differently by each viewer, some of the titles are specific to places that inspired me to create." ~ Juan Alonso-Rodríguez
