Behavior United Dog Training and Separation Anxiety

Being a dachshund terrier mix, I don't like to give things up. I'm currently in negotiations with Behavior United to return content control.

I *could* return control IF they allow me to make appearances on occasion. What else should be included in my demands I mean "requests"?

This past weekend, my humans brought me to Baltimore to help them celebrate their wedding anniversary.

I think they brought me all around the city because they wanted other humans to notice them? I am a pretty big deal.

But, I bark when I notice other canines. Here are some ways my humans create a private space with bottle service for me in public spaces.

I was a respiratory therapist for seventeen years before quitting to work solely in dog training. There was an overlap of dog training and respiratory therapy for about four years before I pulled the plug on the hospital.

As this T-shirt says, I worked night shift in the burn unit at MGH in Boston, MA.

When folks call me for wound care supplies, I always have to clarify - canine or human. 😅

BU is traveling for CEUs this weekend. Can't wait to learn from professor extrodinaire Daniel Mills visiting all the way from the UK. Dr. Daniel Mills is a professional of veterinary behavioral medicine at the University of Lincoln.

No doubt he'll have us standing on our desks to challenge the norms!

Because I said so. You may have used this phrase with a partner, child, or stranger. You were likely exhausted when you said this to someone. You didn’t have the patience nor resilience to explain your position.

Dogs say it too. And I imagine that they too have reached their stress limit when they say, “Because I said so.”

Any dog can bite. Any dog can say “no means no.” It’s time for us to be better advocates for our dogs by recognizing the “because I said so” moments, de-escalating their stress, and in turn helping them live their best lives.

In order to avoid conflict, we all need to be able to “read the room.” It means considering the source of the other's stress and empathizing. It means having good observation skills. De-escalation is a skill that animals use all the time and people could stand to use more often.

When people tell me about their dog’s growling, my second question is what happened leading up to the growl. My first question is, "What was your response to your dog's growling?" Response to growling is an important de-escalation skill everyone should have.

A growl is communication. A growl is a glimpse of something your dog would like to stop and or go away. A growl is often preceded with de-escalating body language that goes unnoticed or unheeded. Please familiarize yourself with the Canine Ladder of Aggression.
