Madera Elementary Earns Top Civics Award in California

SIMI VALLEY, CALIFORNIA: Madera Elementary School received the Civics Learning Award of Excellence, the highest honor given in California’s Civics Learning Award program. Madera is also the only elementary school in California to be named with this distinction this year.

“I am extremely proud of our school community's work to empower students to understand the world around them, lead with purpose, serve with diligence and engage,” said Tracie Bowden, Madera’s principal. “We are thankful to the Civic Learning Award committee for this recognition.”

This is not the first time Madera and other Simi Valley Unified School District schools have been recognized for its Civics instruction. It is the first time any Ventura County School has received the top recognition of “Excellence” for the award. Madera was acknowledged for its civics programs in 2018, 2019 and 2020 as a “Merit” winner. Royal High School was acknowledged in 2013 (Merit), 2016 (Distinction), 2019 (Merit), 2021 (Distinction) and 2023 (Honorable Mention). Hollow Hills Elementary School was recognized in 2018 and 2019 (Merit for both), and Sinaloa Middle School in 2019 (Merit).

The Civic Learning Award for public schools is co-sponsored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero. The awards are designed to both celebrate successful efforts to engage students in civic learning and to identify successful models that can be replicated in other schools. The program has four levels: Awards of Excellence, Distinction, Merit and Honorable Mention. Winners are selected by a panel of experts based on the depth and breadth of their civic learning classes, clubs, and programs.
In addition to the information provided by the applicant, points are added for schools in districts with Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAP) that include terms and actions associated with civic learning. Applicants also earn points for participating in the Judges in the Classroom program, and for creating processes and criteria related to the State Seal of Civic Engagement.

Because of its honor, Madera will receive a visit from California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero in September, which is Constitution Month.

The Simi Valley Unified School District serves 16,000 TK to 12th grade students in 28 campuses. Madera has 248 TK through 6th grade students.

The Civic Learning Awards began in 2013 and are part of the Chief Justice's Civic Learning Initiative, which is led by the Power of Democracy Steering Committee and includes other programs such as Judges in the Classroom. More information is available on the CDE Civic Learning Award for California Public Schools web page. Since their inception, the awards have honored 519 traditional, charter, and magnet schools. In recent years, community schools and continuation schools have also submitted high-ranking applications.

Book exchange is ready for the students next week! So many great reads, from picture books to chapter books to science and history to the classics there is something for everyone.
Monday-Wednesday is scheduled by class and Thursday we will be open during lunch time for any students who were absent or who may want another book.

Can’t wait!

Thank you to the group of students at Sinaloa Middle School who held a book drive for our book exchange! What a hull! The generosity of our community is amazing.
The book exchange begins next Monday 3/4 and runs through 3/7. Teachers will be bringing their classes during assigned times to choose books that are new to them.

Can’t wait to see which new adventure they choose.

We are in need of more upper grade books for our book exchange! Please donate books for grades 3 & up! We will accept them until 3/1. Thank you!

Plan to take the night off from cooking tomorrow (Wednesday, February 21st) and get a great sandwich while supporting Madera!
