It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Worksite Safety“.

In the workplace, ‘good housekeeping’ is the term used for keeping the worksite clean and free of hazards that can cause injury. This isn’t just a matter of appearances – it is a safety issue.

Housekeeping is a safety concern that is often overlooked or taken for granted. Far too many accidents happen because people did not keep their work areas neat and clean. Poor housekeeping also increases the dangers when evacuating the workplace in an emergency. Housekeeping is not something to be swept under the rug. It is a legitimate and important issue.

For information about Worksite Safety, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Insect Safety“.

As summer continues, you may notice a lot of insects buzzing around outside. People with an allergy to stinging insects will want to take extra precautions this time of year to avoid being stung. Many people are at risk for a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction from insect stings.

This may be fatal if not treated immediately. Symptoms of anaphylaxis to watch for include itching and hives over large areas of the body—separate or away from the site of the sting—swelling in the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea.

For information about Insect Safety, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Reporting A Near Miss“.

A “near miss” or accident without injury is easy to shrug off and forget. But there is a danger in brushing off accidents that don’t hurt, harm, or damage. When a “near miss” happens, it should immediately send up a red warning flag that something was wrong, unplanned, unexpected, and could happen again. The next time it happens, it could result in serious damage, injury, or death.

For information about Reporting A Near Miss, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Eye Wash Safety“.

We all hope we never need an eyewash station, but if an accident should happen it’s our wish that the station is clean and accessible. If a foreign particle enters an eye, an emergency eyewash station is the most important initial step in first-aid treatment.

For information about Eye Wash Safety, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)“.

A ground fault can cause severe electrical shock or electrocution. In normal conditions, electricity runs in a closed circuit; Electricity flows out on the “hot” wire and returns on the “neutral” wire, completing the circuit. A ground fault occurs when the electrical current does not complete its circuit and unintentionally flows to the ground. Ground faults can cause fires and are dangerous when they flow through a person to the ground.

A ground fault shock happens when a person comes into contact with the “hot” side of an electrical circuit (example, with wet hands, or while standing in water or on a wet floor).

For information about Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Heat is Coming“.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet every year many people will succumb to the effects of heat.
Heat-related illness is also an underlying cause of a high percentage of non-fatal incidents.

People suffer from heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating. Under certain conditions, sweating will fail to cool the body and the storage of heat over time will lead to the signs and symptoms of heat illness.

For information about Heat Illness Prevention, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Is Blue Light Bad for Your Eyes?“.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and several other medical reviews, blue light is hard for our eyes to block, so nearly all of it travels to our retinas. There has been concern that continuous long-term exposure to blue light can damage retinal cells and cause eye conditions such as eye cancer, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is Introduction to Arc Flash Safety.

Arc Flash is a type of electrical explosion/discharge resulting from a connection through air to ground or another voltage phase in an electrical system (i.e., when a wire contacts a grounding system). The temperatures at the source of an arc flash can reach 20,000 degrees Celsius (36,032 degrees Fahrenheit) – around four times the surface of the sun.

According to the Electrical Safety Foundation, International Workplace Electrical Injury & Fatality Statistics reports that an electrically induced injury occurs in facilities across Europe and the United States every 30 minutes.

It’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is Cell Phone Safety.

Employees often bring their cell phones to work, a choice that could potentially cause numerous hazards on the job. Cell phones can be a dangerous distraction in the workplace. Just like other workplace distractions such as horseplay and chattering with co-workers, cell phones can cause us to lose focus on the task at hand. When used inappropriately, these devices can get employees in trouble at work as well as potentially cause serious injury.
