Dr. Dustin Smoot spent the lunch hour training Surgical Institute staff to become trained, equipped and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. We learned three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out:
🔴1. How to use your hands to apply pressure
🔴2. How to pack a wound to control bleeding
🔴3. How to correctly apply a tourniquet
Trust us - it is easier than you’d think!
Thank you, Dr. Smoot!!

It takes less than five minutes to save a life After 3 leg surgeries and 2 months in a wheelchair, Dr. Smoot said he couldn't wait to get back on his feet and share his story to educate others.
This surgeon almost died in a motorcycle crash. Now, he's teaching fellow bikers life-saving skills. “The No. 1 preventable reason people die after trauma is hemorrhage or bleeding," Smoot said.
Congratulations to the Avera Cancer Institute in Sioux Falls for receiving their accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Re**al Cancer! This recognition marks the first for South Dakota, making it a testament to the superior quality of re**al cancer care available at Avera.

Surgical Institute is offering groundbreaking new treatment for patients with obesity!
Surgical Institute is excited to offer Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), an innovative, endoscopic procedure for weight loss. Earlier this year, the FDA authorized the first devices indicated to perform this groundbreaking procedure.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is the latest development in non-surgical weight loss - available exclusively at Surgical Institute, performed at Avera McKennan by our surgeon, Bradley Thaemert, MD, FACS. You'll benefit from Dr. Thaemert's expertise, as the only board-certified surgeon in the Avera region with the specialized training required to offer ESG.
The ESG is performed by Dr. Thaemert using a small suturing device attached to the end of a camera that is passed down the patient's throat into the stomach. The suturing device reduces the size of the patient's stomach to help a patient feel full faster and lose weight. ESG is incisionless and does not involve removing part of the stomach.
Give us a call at 605-334-0393 for more information!

Dr. Dustin Smoot, MD, FACS is setup at Deadwood-CustomCycles the entire week to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.
Trauma can happen at anytime: motor vehicle accident, active shooters, mass casualty events. Trauma surgeons are not immediately available at these unpredictable events but good samaritans like YOU are. Studies have shown that the help given by an immediate responder can often make the difference between life and death, even before professional rescuers arrive.
Dr. Dustin Smoot is board certified in General Surgery and Trauma Surgery. Stop over and learn how YOU can SAVE A LIFE!
