On 31MAY2022, SSG Fountain, SPC Konechne, SPC Hoffmeister, and SPC Schwebach were on their way back from working their shift when a vehicle accident occurred behind them. They exited a tunnel when a Honda following them crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Ford Focus. They saw the Honda drive off the road and come to a stop on the edge of the cliff. SPC Hoffmeister pulled over to turn around to go help. SPC Hoffmeister and SPC Konechne went over to help the driver of the Honda that was hanging over the cliff, while SSG Fountain and SPC Schwebach ran over to check the Ford Focus that was struck and in the middle of the road.
SSG Fountain and SPC Schwebach approached the Ford Focus, and all three occupants were conscious with no serious injuries. A driver from a vehicle that was not involved in the collision also stopped to help and called 9-1-1. Once SSG Fountain and SPC Schwebach confirmed that no one in the Ford Focus needed medical attention and 9-1-1 was being contacted, they went over to assist SPC Hoffmeister and SPC Konechne with the Honda that was on the edge of the cliff.
SPC Hoffmeister and SPC Konechne approached the Honda that was on the edge of the cliff and assisted getting him out of the vehicle in case it continued to fall. The driver was conscious but disoriented and had a serious arm injury. SPC Hoffmeister and SPC Konechne removed the driver from the vehicle and pulled him to safety. SPC Konechne went back to the vehicle to make sure no one else was inside. The driver asked SPC Hoffmeister to get his belongings and first aid kit out of the back of his vehicle. SPC Konechne confirmed that there was no one else inside the vehicle and SPC Hoffmeister was able to retrieve the driver’s belongings and first aid kit. SPC Hoffmeister then moved the driver from the side of the road to a shaded area under a tree. SPC Hoffmeister used the driver’s first aid kit to clean and dress the injury to his arm and assessed him for further injuries. SPC Hoffmeister continued to monitor the driver and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived.
SSG Fountain, SPC Schwebach, and SPC Konechne stayed in the vicinity of the accident while SPC Hoffmeister attended to the driver of the Honda. SPC Konechne also helped a police officer secure the Honda with a toe strap to ensure the vehicle didn’t go over the cliff. The ambulance and the police arrived at approximately 30 minutes after the accident occurred. SPC Hoffmeister escorted the driver to the ambulance and then gave a primary witness report to the Highway Patrol officer.
Their actions on 31 May 2022 stand as an example of what South Dakota Army National Guard soldiers are capable of and should do anytime on or off duty. They bring great credit upon themselves, the 1742 Trans Co, the SDARNG, and the United States Army.
