We’re currently looking for a Marketing and Event Specialist to develop content in support of the Get Covered Collaborative Navigator program. The CHAD team was excited to join Horizon Health as they welcomed Senator John Thune to help recognize the impact of health centers in communities across South Dakota as part of National Health Center Week. Senator Thune’s ongoing support of community health centers is greatly appreciated! We were also honored to welcome Vacheria Keys, Associate Vice President, Policy & Regulatory Affairs with National Association of Community Health Centers, to South Dakota for this meeting.

Northland Health Centers in Turtle Lake was excited to host Jody and Ryan with Senator Kevin Cramer’s office for a tour to share the impact health centers have on their communities during National Health Center Week. More than 10,400 children in North Dakota and more than 31,500 children in South Dakota get their primary health care from a community health center. As the youngest members of our communities prepare to return to school, CHCs provide immunizations, sports physicals, well-child exams, and dentist appointments.

Yesterday, CHAD team members Kim Kuhlmann and Jennifer Saueressig attended the grand opening of Northland Health Centers's new location in Turtle Lake. Kim and Jenn reflected on the open house, sharing, "Northland has built a beautiful facility in Turtle Lake with their community in mind, creating a welcoming health care home and a location for wellness events and community functions. Every detail is thoughtful, from local art and photographs in the exam rooms to fun chairs in the offices. The new facility will benefit both patients and the community!" Today, we celebrate patients and board members who keep health centers accountable and abreast of community needs.

By law, health center boards must include at least 51% of patients who live in the community served by the health center. This patient-driven model works because it ensures that health centers represent the needs and voice of the community. Local community leaders govern health centers, not far-away corporate executives.

Happy National Health Center Week! We thank Governor Kristi Noem for proclaiming this week a statewide celebration of health centers and the comprehensive care they provide to over 124,540 South Dakotans a year.

Today, we are celebrating Agricultural Worker Health Day because community health centers serve more than 1 million migrant and seasonal agricultural workers, approximately 20% of the total estimated agricultural worker population in the United States and territories.

Health Care for People Experiencing Homelessness Day is a time to honor and celebrate the work being done at health centers to provide high-quality, comprehensive primary care, behavioral health care, case management, outreach, and other needed services to meet the needs of unhoused people. People who are unhoused have high rates of chronic and acute disease, behavioral health conditions, and other needs that make them particularly vulnerable to poor health, disability, and early death.
