Robert Milligan was an enslaver and merchant who was largely responsible for the construction of London's West India Docks, where his statue was erected in 1809. Protesters recently placed a cardboard placard reading Black Lives Matter in the statue's left hand and shrouded it in a Dutch wax print. Dutch wax prints have a multicultural history that's part Dutch, part Indonesian, and part African. For a number of reasons, wax prints, like kente cloth, have become visual cues of Africanity. Covering Milligan's head with an African cloth was an act of resistance and redress that has had lasting results. On June 9, 2020, the statue, which stood on the site for over 200 years, was removed thanks to activism and petitioning of community members.
