Some great things are happening here at Millwood Impact! Jeremy Clark who has been our Program Director for the past couple years is moving into a new position called "Operations Director." Peyton, who joined us almost 1 year ago as the STAR Club Coordinator has done a great job, and is now moving into Jeremy's Program Director Position! That means we have a job opening for the STAR Club Coordinator Position. Please take a look at the job description and share it to people who might be interested. We are hoping to get this person hired before September 1. Thanks

Day 4 of our summer STAR Club is done, wrapping up our first week of the summer program! We spent the day doing pottery and gardening with WSU Spokane County Extension SNAP-Ed/Food $ense + master gardener Sue, and ended with some time in the sunshine ☀️ A quote from one of our fifth graders, Serenity, as we did pottery - “This is so relaxing. Thank you for teaching me how to do this!”

Day 3 of Summer STAR Club! Mary-Pat and Wayne, two of our amazing volunteers, taught a hands-on pottery course that will continue over the next few weeks. Students then got to pull weeds and plant tomatoes at the community garden! 🌟

Day 2 of our STAR Club summer program! Students got to see snakes, rabbits, owls, tortoises, lizards, and birds up close as we learned about each of the unique animals at the Outdoor Learning Center! During lunch, one of our students - Tylee Smith - told our STAR Club coordinator, “Peyton, I’m having such a good time right now. I’m talking to people that I never talk to and it’s actually fun!” 🌟

Our STAR Club Summer Program is off to a fantastic start! We spent this morning at the Outdoor Learning Center, and this quote from one of our students - Colton Goodman - is a great example of the fun and connection the kids are having. “One thing to know about me is that creeks make me really calm. For the last few minutes I’ve just been standing here listening to the water and the birds.” 🌟

This last week was the final week of STAR club for Ness and Orchard Center students until summer programs kick off in a few weeks! Huge shout out to Peyton, our STAR club coordinator who has been knocking it out of the park! She put together the final party days with a bounce house, legos, 5th grade graduation certificates, words of encouragement from mentors and staff, and domino’s pizza for dinner. All the students had a blast on their final day, and many were quite sad it was the last one for a while.

Wednesday we took students up to Mt Spokane from our STAR Club after-school program... Here is an excerpt from Jeremy our Program Director about the day!

"On Wednesday we had the privilege of bringing 13 STAR Club students up to Mt. Spokane. Only a couple of those students had ever been skiing or snowboarding and they all had an incredible time. A few moments stand out for me as I consider this outing. The first thing I can’t help but point out is that we saw these students grow a little bit in their confidence. Watching a kid wobble and fall for the first hour or so as they figure out how to balance on skis, growing in their ability on the practice hill and gaining confidence to get on the chair lift within an hour was so impressive to me. These kids are brave and I will be mentioning that to them for a while whenever I see them!

The other thing that really stood out to me was how encouraging each kid was to one another. Even the students that struggled to get the hang of skiing had a smile on their faces throughout the day. Students paired off and rode on the lift together, helped each other when they fell and offered patient guidance when someone was struggling. At one point, Brandon and I were on a more advanced run with a few girls. These girls were crushing it on the bunny hill and were excited to test their skills on a steeper part of the mountain, so we gave it a try. It wasn’t nearly as easy as they expected, but they persevered and made it down. One of them really surprised me the most in that situation. She stopped time after time to help the other two and was far more helpful than I was in giving constructive feedback to help the other girls to get through that difficult section of the mountain.

When I stop to consider how this outing contributed to the mission of STAR Club and Millwood Impact, I see that these students felt more connected to each other and to our program because of this outing. I hope we get a chance to do this again in the future. I am still sore and exhausted, but it was totally worth it!"

Thank you to Mt Spokane Ski and snowboard park for putting a great program together and getting these students lessons, gear, and lunch... and experience they won't forget.
