Today we remember Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Ryan Nimtz

Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Nimtz was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of South Military Trail and SW 10th Street while responding to a domestic violence call at 3:00 a.m.
His patrol car collided with a pickup truck in the intersection. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Deputy Nimtz had served with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for 16 months. He was one week from resigning from the department to move to Indiana. Deputy Sheriff Nimtz is survived by his wife and two children.

Today we remember Home Confinement Officer Michael Sillman

Home Confinement Officer Michael Sillman suffered a fatal heart attack while assisting other deputies with a warrant service on a wanted fugitive at a house on William Smith Road.
The deputies parked out of sight from the home and were walking through rugged terrain to reach the house when Officer Sillman suddenly collapsed. Other deputies immediately began CPR but were unable to revive him.
Officer Sillman had served with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for four years and was also the active serving police chief of the Grant Town Police Department. He is survived by his wife, who also serves as a law enforcement officer.

Deputy Sheriff Bill Garner was struck and killed by a vehicle while at the scene of a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 164 on I-85 at about 7:15 pm.
He was assisting the occupants of the involved vehicle when another vehicle lost control, entered the median, and struck him. Deputy Garner was transported to St. Mary's Sacred Heart where he succumbed to his injuries.
The man driving the vehicle that struck him was charged with homicide by vehicle.
Deputy Garner had served with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office for one year. He had previously served with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and the Pendegrass Police Department for over 12 years. He is survived by his wife, parents, and brother.

Today we remember Sergeant Michael David Stephen, Sr.

Sergeant Mike Stephen was shot and killed while responding to a domestic incident at a home in the area of 2020 Flag Road at about 9:00 am.
He was speaking to a female in the front yard when another subject opened fire, striking Sergeant Stephen and the woman. The subject who shot Sergeant Stephen was found dead by responding deputies.
Sergeant Stephen was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Stone County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. He also served as chief of the Pineville Fire Department and had previously served with the Arkansas Department of Correction. He is survived by his wife.

Today we remember Patrolman Vincent Anthony Parks

Patrolman Vinnie Parks passed away after collapsing while participating in physical exercises at the Central Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy's facility at Camp Robinson.
He started showing signs of distress and was able to walk to an ambulance before collapsing. The Central Arkansas area was under a heat advisory at the time.
Patrolman Parks had served with the Jonesboro Police Department for only one month. He is survived by his wife, daughter, mother, sister, and grandmother.

Investigator Richard Grant suffered a fatal heart attack while investigating a motor vehicle fatality at Highway 78 East and Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Tucker.
Investigator Grant collapsed and was transported to Emory Decatur Hospital, where he passed away.
Investigator Grant had served one year with the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office. He had previously served for 24 years with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and Clayton County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Today we remember Sergeant Joshua Blake Bartlett

Sergeant Josh Bartlett was shot and killed during a barricade at a home in the 1100 block of 10th Street in Levelland.
Earlier in the morning, the subject had been stopped by a Texas Highway Patrol trooper for reckless driving and attempted to bait the officer into a confrontation. The subject returned home after the encounter and began walking around the neighborhood with a firearm at about 1:15 pm. When officers with the Levelland Police Department arrived, the man opened fire on him and then barricaded himself inside. The regional SWAT team was requested as the man randomly fired shots from the home.
Sergeant Bartlett and three other members of the SWAT team were shot as they engaged the subject. Sergeant Bartlett was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Levelland, where he succumbed to his wounds. Several other team members were wounded, one critically.
The subject was taken into custody at about 11:30 pm.
Sergeant Bartlett was a U. S. Army veteran and served with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office for over eight years. He is survived by his wife, four sons, parents, and a brother.

Today we remember Trooper Michael Paul Stewart, III

Trooper Michael Stewart was killed in a vehicle crash on Route 711, at the Route 271 split, in Ligonier Township, Westmoreland County, at approximately 2:20 am.
His patrol SUV was traveling southbound when a garbage truck attempted to turn left onto the roadway in front of it, causing a collision. Trooper Stewart suffered fatal injuries in the crash and his partner suffered minor injuries.
Trooper Stewart had served with the Pennsylvania State Police for three and a half years.

Today we remember Detective Melvin Vincent Santiago

Detective Melvin Santiago was shot and killed at 4:09 am when he and his partner responded to a robbery call at a 24-hour pharmacy on the corner of Communipaw Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
A male subject had entered the store and assaulted a private security guard. He severely beat the guard and stole his service weapon, then waited for responding officers to arrive with the intention to ambush them.
Detective Santiago and his partner had just pulled into the parking lot as the man exited the building and opened fire on them without warning. Detective Santiago was struck in the head before he was able to exit from the patrol car's passenger seat.
Other responding officers returned fire and killed the subject.
Detective Santiago had graduated from the academy only six months prior to the incident. He was survived by his mother and stepfather.

Today we remember Police Officer Marco Antonio Zarate

Police Officer Marco Zarate was killed in a motorcycle crash in the 8500 block of Ferris Drive while pursuing a vehicle that had been involved in an earlier shoplifting.
He was responding to a shoplifting call at a Target store in Meyerland Plaza at approximately 1:30 pm and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle in the parking lot. The vehicle fled from the parking lot with Officer Zarate in pursuit. Officer Zarate's motorcycle struck a landscaping trailer as the pursuit traveled down Ferris Street, between Chimney Rock Road and South Rice Avenue.
The vehicle he was pursuing continued to flee but was eventually taken into custody. On March 8, 2019, the suspect convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Officer Zarate was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Bellaire Police Department for seven years. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Today we remember Police Officer Ismael Z. Chavez

Police Officer Ismael Chavez and Police Officer Edelmiro Garza were shot and killed from ambush while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home in the 3500 block of Queta Street.
They had approached the front door of the home when they were suddenly ambushed and shot before drawing their weapons or making an emergency broadcast. Other officers who were sent to check on them came across the scene and immediately requested backup.
The subject who ambushed them committed su***de as additional units arrived on scene.
Officer Chavez had served with the McAllen Police Department for 2-1/2 years.
