On June 7th, Elana Stahl, Patient Navigator at CCNW, raised $770 in support of the local non-profit organization Cancer Can’t. Utilizing a pledge-per-lap approach, Elana ran an impressive 33 miles in 12 hours to raise funds for oncology patients in our community.

Cancer Can't is dedicated to serving oncology patients across the Inland Northwest region by offering grants, lodging, and essential transportation services. Many of these patients journey from rural areas spanning Idaho, Washington, and Montana to Spokane, specifically for their cancer treatments, which can include up to 6 weeks of daily radiation or weekly chemotherapy.

The funds raised by Elana will contribute to various Cancer Can’t programs, including:
🏨 covering co-pays for lodging
🚙 assisting with transportation expenses for oncology appointments
💳 providing gas cards to facilitate travel arrangements
🏠 offering lodging accommodations during treatment periods in Spokane

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Elana for her compassion and benevolence in aiding local cancer patients, and we invite you to join us in acknowledging her remarkable contributions.

This week, CCNW Neurological Surgeon Dr. Alex MacKay, MD, FAANS, retires from CCNW! We want to thank him for his unwavering commitment to the well-being of his patients and his remarkable dedication to the field of neurological radiosurgery.

Dr. MacKay has had a very noble 43-year career in medicine. While at the University of California San Francisco for his residency, he developed a stereotactic CT localization frame used for radiation implants to treat brain tumors. He continued using this technique after moving to Spokane, and later used LINAC based radiosurgery, also known as the X-Knife, when it became available. With 32 years of general neurosurgical practice in Spokane and 12 years of Gamma Knife expertise, Dr. MacKay devoted his attention to the treatment of brain tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, and vascular malformations.

Dr. MacKay may your days be as fulfilling and rewarding as the lives you’ve touched. Enjoy this well-deserved time of relaxation and joy. Happy Retirement.

Dr. Hakan Kaya, CCNW Medical Oncologist & Hematologist, has been volunteering as a medic/guardian for the Inland Northwest Honor Flight program for the past 12 years. Yesterday, he embarked on a journey from Spokane to Washington D.C. alongside 89 veterans. Founded in 2009, Inland Northwest Honor Flight's mission is to transport Inland Northwest war veterans to Washington D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Yesterday’s itinerary included Arlington National Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Military Service Museum at Arlington, WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Navy Memorial, and the Marine Corps Memorial. It was a busy, but unforgettable day, for our Inland Northwest Veterans!

CCNW extends its sincerest appreciation to all our veterans for their selfless service and unwavering dedication to our country.
