When we are young we never contemplate that getting off of the ground might be something we can no longer do easily or at all. If you are in your 50’s or 60’s and this is becoming difficult for you, it’s time to think about taking steps to change that.
I had a conversation yesterday with a client about his new found hope. After taking care of a family member his own health deteriorated and his ability to perform normal activities like getting up from the floor or tying his shoes became burdensome. It is all too common to look at where we are currently and think this is just who I am now. But most often it is possible to get off of path we find ourselves on and change the trajectory of our future. It’s not always easy at first. Change is hard. But I guarantee not changing is harder. There is hope. Through all the fear, difficulties and negative thoughts, there is hope. Embrace that glimmer of light and follow it to a new future that you are in control of.

Over pronation of the foot/ankle is a relatively common occurrence. Less common but of
concern for plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, ankle sprains, hammertoes and bunions is under pronation. During the normal gait cycle (walking) we need some pronation to lock the foot into a more rigid lever otherwise forces generated with the push off phase can lead to problems. If this sounds like you, getting a proper exam may get you back to pain free movement!

If you’re not sure how to best train for your sport or just your ability to move well, look for the low hanging fruit. What can’t you do well? Focus on shoring up weaknesses first!
Strength training helps you deliver force to the ground but without well developed balance you simply won’t be able to express it dynamically.
Runners have a 90% annual injury rate. Be the 10% that remains healthy by working on your specific strength deficits and identifying risks in alignment and gait pattern.
Having adequate strength is always the first step towards creating a resilient body but it is not enough to correct for poor movement! New movement patterns need to be layered in.

If you are 60 years of age or older -try this 4 stage balance test. Start with the easiest parallel stance and progress to the next more challenging stance. This test is what I use for the minimum standard for all of my clients and ultimately we work to achieve 30 seconds on the last most challenging, one leg balance without support including not touching the ankles together. Try this one to see how you are doing concerning your balance. Can you achieve 30 seconds on one leg?

Striving to be an expert in your field is a noble endeavor. But it is important to always keep an open mind rather than sticking to what you have always done.
Always be open to incorporate new information rather than defending your current, outdated, position.
Things change and if you don’t, it won’t just be the information that is outdated.
