PREPARING FOR WINTER: The US National Weather Service Spokane Washington is anticipating a significant weather change this week, including snowfall starting Tuesday evening into Wednesday and a drop in temperatures.
As our community prepares, please visit spokaneschools.org/weather to learn how SPS determines whether to open, close or delay school on days impacted by inclement forces beyond our control.
Here are some important reminders (please pass them along!)
❄️ Staff and families will be notified of a closure or late-start via the district's notification system as soon as a determination has been made. You can expect to receive that message by email, text, and phone between approximately 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. We will also share the notification on our social media channels.
❄️ If you don't see a notification of a closure or delay by 6 a.m., you can assume school is scheduled as usual that day. Please always send students to school with weather appropriate clothing.
❄️ We carefully weigh school closures and delays – it's not a decision we make lightly. Please remember that during inclement weather, school is the safest place for many of our nearly 30,000 students, where they can stay warm, be supervised, and receive two of their daily meals.
❄️ Parents are always encouraged to consider the conditions of their neighborhood and the well-being of their students in deciding whether to keep their student home. Parents who decide to keep their student home should contact their school office to request an excused absence.
❄️ Our maintenance and operations staff are responsible for the sidewalks, crossing areas, and parking lots within our school property. If you feel that those specific areas are not shoveled or plowed properly, please let us know at spokaneschools.org/letstalk.
❄️ By City of Spokane - Municipal Government ordinance, citizens and businesses must keep their sidewalks shoveled. PLEASE help our students travel safely to and from school by clearing a 36-inch path after each snowfall.
Thank you for your partnership and patience as we navigate this winter together!
