With National Forest Week last week and the extreme heat waves recently, we are really missing Snow School! Here’s a quote from one of the high schoolers who enjoyed it as much as we did:
“Thank you so much for allowing our class to experience our wildlife. You and your team have shown us the details of the big picture we may not have seen before. My favorite memory was seeing a moose on our trip to Mt Spokane in March. It was cold and peaceful. I didn’t feel rushed on the mountain, so my friends and I got to sight see. That trip was also a lot of firsts for me. First time seeing a moose out in the wild, first time snowshoeing, and my first time going up to Mt Spokane. I’m grateful because I probably wouldn’t have gotten the chance to experience this if I hadn’t gone on the field trip. What I learned on these trips was to be more observant about our wildlife. I appreciate nature more because of what I saw, and how pretty it all is. I will be going on more hikes this summer!”

Here is a really great article about how our partners, the Kalispel Tribe, are working to restore forests on their ancestral lands, mitigate some of the impacts of climate change on forest health, and reduce community impacts from wildfires.

The Lands Council is so grateful for strong partnerships with local Native communities, and particularly with Jeff Ferguson and Margo Lee Hill, leaders of Expo 50 Spokane's Tribal pillar.
The opening ceremony of the Legislative Summit featured ceremonial drumming and dancing by children of the Spokane Tribe; Darnell Sam of the
Upper Columbia United Tribes - UCUT led a symbolic salmon ceremony; and the summit wrapped up with canoe races on the Spokane River, where regional tribal members paddled in traditional dugout canoes.
Thank you to ALL who helped coordinate and celebrate these wonderful events, including our Climate Justice Program Director, Naghmana Ahmed-Sherazi.
We’re thrilled to have Vanessa Waldref, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, as a keynote speaker at TLC’s Legislative Summit, diving into Expo ’74’s impact on environmental justice in the Inland Northwest. From transforming Spokane’s railyards into Riverfront Park to ongoing challenges like river toxins and salmon preservation, join us as we reflect on 50 years of progress and the path forward. 🌲🌊
