Put on your costume, bring your appetite, warm up your thumbs, and come join us for a text bank on Wed 10/30!

Don't be afraid (even if it's spooky)!

We'll be texting voters about the importance of voting in this election, and urge them to vote NO against a slate of four deceptive and dangerous ballot initiatives – I-2109, I-2117, I-2124, and I-2066.

How Spokane gained its urbanist reputation 10/28/2024

"There was one city that had more elected officials on the lineup than any other in the country: Spokane.

'We are big YIMBYs and pro-housing,' Spokane City Council member Zack Zappone told the Zoom group. 'In this last year, we have completely eliminated single-family zoning in our city citywide. This summer, we completely eliminated costly parking mandates.'

Zappone spoke at the event alongside City Council members Kitty Klitzke and Paul Dillon. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown was also scheduled to speak, but had to miss the call because of a last-minute scheduling conflict.

'We are the second biggest city in the state, but — sorry Seattle — we are number one in terms of pro-housing policy,' Dillon told the group. 'Not that it's a competition, but it kind of is.'

(Seattle, one of the bluest cities in America, had zero elected officials speaking at the event.)

As the Spokane politicians spoke, attendees spammed the live chat with supportive messages and 'Ws,' short for 'win.' They described Spokane as 'ON FIRE' and 'based' and 'leading the way in Washington.'".

"In recent years, Spokane has gained a reputation as a pro-housing leader. The city's zoning policies continue to receive attention not just across the state, but even from other parts of the country. While many cities are only now starting to explore the idea of ending single family zoning, Spokane is way ahead of the curve."

How Spokane gained its urbanist reputation In August, more than 30,000 Democrats who support making it easier to build housing gathered online for a "YIMBYs For Harris" Zoom fundraising call. YIMBY...

Here's what The Seattle Times editorial board recommends on Initiative 2109, regarding the capital gains tax | Editorial 10/16/2024

"Washington has had a capital gains tax for nearly three years and since that time it has generated about $1.2 billion to support, among other things, child care and preschool education for those who otherwise couldn’t afford it.

The tax is paid by those who cash in certain investments — mainly stocks and bonds — and net more than $262,000 in 2023 (adjusted up from $250,000 for inflation) from the transaction. It doesn’t affect the sale of a home or farm. Still, about 0.2% of Washingtonians — and about 60% of those are from King County — have paid the tax. "

This Sunday! Join Governor Inslee and the No on 2117 coalition on October 13!
We’ll be rallying and knocking on doors as we fight to defeat the deceptive and dangerous initiative. While we’re trying to build a better future for Spokane communities, the people behind I-2117 only want to drag us backward.

You can join the fight for better, brighter days ahead and join the No on 2117 coalition in Spokane on October 13 to talk to local community members about why they should vote NO on I-2117.

We will provide a training and campaign materials at the event for all of our attendees. Just bring walking shoes, a water bottle, and a friend! RSVP to join us!

⚠️ ATTENTION: Spokane City Council Homelessness Roundtable ⚠️

NEXT TUESDAY, October 1st, Spokane City Council is hosting their second roundtable on homelessness in Spokane on the third floor of the Central Library from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

This is the second in a series of community roundtables organized by Spokane City Council after they deferred to vote on the adoption of Ordinance C36549: the “Homeless Bill of Rights” in August. This important ordinance would make “housing status” a protected class, guaranteeing unhoused people freedom from discrimination in seeking housing and employment in Spokane.

If able, please attend the second roundtable meeting next week to get educated on and speak in support of the rights of unhoused individuals in our community.

We also ask all to please email the City Council at [email protected] to voice your support for human rights and dignity for all and advocate for the adoption of ORD: C36549.

Ordinance summary per City of Spokane Human Rights Commission:

“The Spokane Human Rights Commission adopted a resolution relating to the human rights and basic dignities of individuals experiencing homelessness in 2023. City Council, with help from Legal, created an ordinance with refined parameters based on the resolution. This ordinance adds "housing status" to the city's list of protected classes and strengthens protections against discriminatory hiring and employment practices, property rights and privacy rights of individuals experiencing homelessness.”
