Celebrating Men’s Health
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! Father’s Day is extra special in Spokane because this holiday was inaugurated in our hometown!
June is also National Men’s Health Month, which is a good reminder for men to get an annual check-up and to recenter on positive diet and lifestyle choices. Routine blood work can help you understand important health markers, like triglycerides, glucose, inflammatory markers, and more.
When we think about men’s health, prostate cancer is usually top of mind. It is the second most common cancer types among men, and it is estimated that 1 in 9 men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their life. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is often recommended for men starting around age 50, which can provide clues about the health and function of this glad.
Here are the top 5 diet and lifestyle reminders to keep our dads at the top of their game:
1. Maintain a healthy weight: A healthy weight lowers metabolic factors such as glucose, A1c, and inflammatory markers.
2. Stay strong: Research shows that men who get regular exercise (at least 30 minutes a day) have a reduced risk of developing heart disease, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other metabolic diseases such as Type-2 diabetes. Additionally, muscle tone is a key indicator of longevity.
3. Be conscious of alcohol consumption: Research shows that excessive alcohol consumption can increase the lethality of prostate cancer and increase the risk of heart disease.
4. Address nutrient deficiencies: Zinc is an important nutrient for the immune system and prostate health. It is involved in over 200 enzymatic reactions in the body and is an important antioxidant. Marginal zinc deficiency is common the US, especially in the older population. Zinc deficiency may also be a contributing factor to prostate enlargement.
5. Eat a balanced, nutrient rich diet: Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of clean quality protein, and organic vegetables and fruit gives us the fuel for life. Keeping the tank full of nutrient dense foods, rather than processed and refined foods, keeps all systems of the body working efficiently.
So dads, this Father’s Day, remember that health is in your hands!

Have you ever felt confused about what to buy at the grocery store? There are thousands of products on the shelves, and every food supplier is competing for your business and attention. They use catchy buzz-words like “All Natural,” “Fat-Free,” “Sugar-Free,” “Keto,” and “Free-Range” to make it sound like their product is a smart choice. But what should you really be looking for in the store and on labels and how do you know what’s really in your food? What are the best options for a healthy diet?
No matter what eating plan you follow; vegetarian, omnivore, paleo, etc, Lesley will help you identify the best choices on the shelf and help you understand what food labels actually mean and what to look for.

Welcome Lesley Herrmann, our new nutritionist!
My health journey started in 2011. While working at a national laboratory as an engineer, my life-long digestive woes became unbearable. A new doctor I was seeing identified one major cause, Celiac disease, but traditional medicine couldn't help me heal.
I soon turned to a multi-faceted functional approach, which included changing my diet and as a result, I became fascinated by nutrition! Food had made me sick, and now it was helping me heal!
A few years later, I enrolled in the Holistic Nutritional Consulting program at Bauman College in Boulder CO and in 2015 earned my board certification through the National Association of Nutritional Professionals (NANP). I also earned my certification as a wellness coach through U.S. Corporate Wellness. Being a nutritional consultant fulfilled my desire to help people directly in a positive, which my engineering job always lacked.
I have over 10 years of experience in commercial and residential building science and, ironically, have lived through toxic mold illness. I use this experience to bridge the gap between the health of the home and the health of the body and offer support and guidance to those experiencing similar situations. As a Nutritional Consultant, I specialize in environmental illness, detoxification, and GI health. I love using delicious food as a foundation to help people create supportive diet and lifestyle practices to strengthen and optimize health.
In my free time, you will find me country swing dancing at Nashville North, paddling round on my kayak, or working on the art of motorcycle riding! You may even see me around Avista Stadium with the Spokane Indians! Working with the team is a fun summer job I enjoy to get involved with the community! My lifelong goal is to own land in Montana and build a strawbale home.
I am so looking forward to meeting more of the fabulous people at the Metabolic Institute and helping our community achieve their health goals!
We are all looking forward to spring at TMI! And to kick off the season, we are hosting evening and weekend workshops to help our community on Semaglutide achieve their healthy weight goals! Our Reset-30 program focuses on how to build nourishing meals and make healthy diet and lifestyle choices that will support optimal health for the long-term.
We just had our first Rest-30 class on March 13th! Debbie and Lesley discussed the use of Semaglutide and the importance of eating the right food while using the therapy to support metabolic balance. Participants had a chance to complete a body composition scan to set nutrient goals and monitor progress, and ask lots of great questions. Each person took home their Reset-30 kit, which includes a protein shake meal replacement, supportive supplements for GI health, and a workbook for tracking goals. And of course, there were yummy sample of the protein shake!
Our next workshop is schedule for Saturday, March 30th from 10:00-11:00 AM.
See flyer attached for more details.

Have you recently started Semaglutide (Ozempic or Wegovy), have been using the therapy for some time or contemplating its use? …. read on.
At the Metabolic Institute, semaglutide is used as a short-term therapy in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle to help reset metabolism. Patients prescribed semaglutide (Ozempic or Wegovy) are looking to reverse or prevent type two diabetes and achieve a healthy weight, and this therapy can help people improve blood sugar levels and kickstart weight loss.
If you are using semaglutide, it is important to continue striving for optimal diet and lifestyle habits so that when you are transitioned off the drug, weight, metabolic markers, and overall health can be maintained indefinitely.
Positive diet and lifestyle habits include:
- Eating a whole-food based diet
- Limiting sugar and refined carbohydrates
- Focusing on healthy protein, fat, and colorful veggies
- Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
- Exercising regularly, including weight bearing exercise
- Limiting alcohol
The Metabolic Institute will be hosting interactive classes to help our clients set and achieve healthy habits! The Reset-30 program is designed to get you on track for a successful long-term outcome with semaglutide!
In this workshop, you will receive:
- A 30-day diet and lifestyle tracker
- Goal setting worksheets
- Accountability & support
- Nutrient-dense organic protein powder for meal and snack replacement
- Yummy samples!

Molecular Hydrogen (H2)- A Tiny Molecule with Amazing Health Benefits
Molecular Hydrogen (H2) may be a small molecule, but it packs a powerful punch when you consider the 1200+ studies and publications that support its potential health benefits. Based on its size and neutral charge, H2 can cross cell membranes giving it the ability to access DNA and mitochondria. Once inside the cell, it goes to work protecting them from free radicals that contribute to the progression of diseases and aging.
What are the potential health benefits?
Some of the research shows the following:
H2 supports the body’s antioxidant system and can protect cells from oxidative stress.
H2 is anti-inflammatory and may reduce pain. Animal studies and Rheumatoid Arthritis studies in humans look promising.
H2 can improve recovery times in athletes. Studies in elite athletes showed a reduction in lactic acid build-up after intense workouts, leading to reduced muscle fatigue and shortened recovery times.
H2 has neuroprotective properties. Studies in patients with Parkinson’s Disease show a reduction in damage to the brain.
H2 studies show improvement in insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control. Improvements in cholesterol levels have also been documented. H2 is a potential powerhouse in treating diseases like diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
H2 is believed to protect the organs in the body through its anti-inflammatory/oxidative stress fighting properties.
Here at The Metabolic Institute, we are excited to offer our patients H2 Therapy. We offer two forms of H2 staring @$19.95 for a 30-minute session. Please call the office for details or to schedule an appointment.
