Our Fall Newsletter is live!!! This issue we decided to tackle some difficult and sometimes taboo topics, such as provider mental health, substance abuse, burnout and where we go from here. We interviewed providers regionally and have a column piece dedicated to their responses. Here's a small snapshot below:

Q: Do you think there is a higher risk of substance abuse as a coping mechanism in the fire and EMS culture?
A: "Yes, substance abuse is often a result of self-medicating behavior due to under diagnosed mental health issues related to trauma. Our Type A personalities allow us to be helpers but never ask for help. It’s easier to sit at a bar than it is to admit you need help and seek it out. The culture of the fire service and EMS historically embraced alcohol as a healthy way to deal with traumatic calls; “Nothing a few beers won’t fix.” That was the motto and to some extent, it still is...."

Our division, in partnership with WMEMS and WHRSAC, offered multiple sessions of Nero's Law training and educated over 220 EMS providers! We were proud to host this important event. Thank you to everyone who came out and participated - especially the K9s!

Last Thursday our Division attended the 10th Annual Western New England Acute Cardiology Conference.

East Longmeadow Fire Department and Westfield Firefighters Local 1111 both received awards for the fastest STEMI times in 2022.

Our Division's Dr. Mat Goebel presented on EMS Pre-Activation in STEMI and Aaron Olk presented on Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest: An EMS Perspective.

With over 200 in attendance (both in person and on zoom) it was a very fun and educational day! We can't wait for next year!

❗❗❗Upcoming Nero's Law Practical Training❗❗❗

The Western Region Homeland Security Advisory Council (WRHSAC) in partnership with Western Mass EMS (WMEMS) is hosting multiple training sessions that fulfill the practical training portion of Chapter 23 of the Acts of 2022 – commonly known as Nero’s Law.

Hampden county sessions will take place at the Baystate Health Education Center in Holyoke on Saturday, November 4th at 9am, 11am, and 1pm. Each session is 90 minutes.

Join us on Monday, September 25th for an evening of M&M credit with the LIFE STAR 3 team out of Westfield, MA. LIFESTAR will supply dinner and dessert while we review medical and trauma cases from all around western MA! Please arrive for dinner after 5pm. M&M case review will begin promptly at 6pm in the LIFESTAR hangar. 2.0 hours of OEMS credit have been approved. This M&M will not be live streamed.

Last Wednesday our Division, in conjunction with the EM Residency program and Six Flags New England, hosted our 5th Disaster Day Event! We hosted over 150 local EMS providers, physicians, residents and students who practiced emergency drills and various medical skills stations, including but not limited to stop the bleed training, adult and pediatric triage and field amputations. This valuable training keeps our communities safe and provides our providers and local public safety partners the opportunity to enhance their skills and work together.

A huge thank you to our instructors who came out on a very hot day to help teach, and to SFNE for hosting us yet again. We can't wait to see you all again next year for #6!

We have listened to feedback from from previous years and have come up with 6 unique stations! These will include stations such as chest injuries, adult & pediatric triage, neuro injuries, crush injuries and hemorrhage control! After rotating through these 6 stations in the morning, we will have lunch and 2 MCI drills featuring both in and out of hospital scenarios in the afternoon.

This past weekend, our division helped to staff the medical tents for Iron Man 70.3 Western Mass, along with volunteers from Baystate Health and AMR of Springfield. Thank you to AMR and the doctors, PAs, NPs, RNs and paramedics who volunteered their time and joined us for such a fun day.

It couldn't rain on our parade of stroke education outreach last weekend - at the Pride Parade that is. 🏳️‍🌈 Despite some chilly wet weather, spirits were high and fun was had. Again, our division teamed up with AMR of Springfield and Baystate Stroke Services to deliver much needed stroke symptom awareness to the community.
