No one ever wants to see their child sick. When their 3-year-old son Ryan began complaining of leg pain, Shannon and Tim Caney thought he may be experiencing “growing pains.” It wasn’t long before Ryan was unable to walk. Shannon and Tim knew then they needed to act fast. They brought Ryan to Baystate Children’s Hospital. There, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a fast-moving illness that affects the nerves and can lead to paralysis.
“We knew something was wrong and thankfully the team at Baystate was able to diagnose him quickly and treat him right away, and that’s what really saved the disorder from working its way up his body,” said Shannon. “We are just so grateful for the staff, the treatment, and being able to have our Ryan back.”
Please consider a gift today to support care for kids like Ryan: https://bit.ly/3VNbPvb

Each day, healthcare is changing. The pace is rapid, and the work is life changing. It takes a special person to decide to dedicate their career to caring for others.
Dr. Mark A. Keroack is one of those special people. He and his wife, Dr. Ann Errichetti, have created the Mark A. Keroack, MD Endowed Chair of Medicine to support the work and efforts of the next generation of physicians being trained at Baystate Health through the Department of Medicine. The inaugural holder of this title is Dr. Sarah Haessler, who has served as chair of the Department of Medicine since 2022.

Earlier this month, Baystate Medical Center celebrated the grand-reopening of the Lawson Community Room in the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit , which has been closed to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the space has shifted back to its original purpose – to provide a gathering space for the older patient population the unit serves.
With the hire of a full-time coordinator, the Community Room hosts social activities, such as games, group lunches, and arts and crafts. ACE staff members and volunteers strive to make the unit as home-like as possible and excel at providing longer-lived patients with a specialized care environment tailored to the nuances of aging.
“It is a beautiful thing that I get to sit and eat lunch with my loved one without being in a patient room,” shared the family member of a patient. “When you are in the hospital you feel like a patient all the time. This gives the patients time to feel like a whole person rather than a sick person and for us to be able to share some quality time together as a family is a wonderful gift.”
Thank you to the many donors who have joined together to provide more than $430,000 in support to the ACE unit. These funds have truly helped bring the space and care to life, supporting important resources like the purchase of pocket amplifiers to help improve communication and increase understanding for those who have difficulty hearing, sleep chairs for patient rooms, and activity kits and other resources to engage patients during their hospital stays. Thank you to all who have supported this important resource for our community!
Baystate Health looks forward to continuing the enhancement and development of specialized care for our aging population. You, too, can help support this high-level care by reaching out to Baystate Health Foundation at 413-794-5444 or making a donation online here: https://bit.ly/4dHbUcl
Members of Baystate Health Foundation’s 2023 donor societies were recognized at the President’s Evening of Gratitude last night. The Armory at MGM Springfield was the perfect setting to gather in celebration of philanthropic partnerships that have made a tremendous impact on the health of our community. Dr. Mark Keroack reflected on his 44-year career and the accomplishments that would not have been possible without the support of donors throughout western Massachusetts. In addition, David Woods and his late wife Elizabeth “Evie” Woods were honored with the 2024 Impact Award for their remarkable dedication as volunteers and legacy of commitment to Baystate Health. We’re excited to announce the creation of a new comprehensive community health center located in the heart of the city of Springfield, made possible by the generous support of our longstanding partner, MassMutual.
Through MassMutual donation, which includes approximately 10 acres of land in the southeast corner of its Springfield campus and a $5 million donation from the MassMutual Foundation, Baystate Health will create a state-of-the-art health center that will centralize services, creating a medical neighborhood caring for children, families, and adults that includes primary care and behavioral health services.
The new center, which will merge the existing Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center, Baystate High Street Health Center, Baystate High Street Pediatrics, and Wesson Women’s Clinic, will have greater access by public transportation, ample free parking, and provide a one-stop shop for the care, creating an easier experience for our patients.
We are grateful to our partners, MassMutual, and look forward to enhancing care for patients in our region.
