We demand justice for Sonya Massey. She should still be alive, with her family, with her community. Sonya’s tragic murder by police highlights the intersection of racism and ableism, and how this intersection puts BIPOC, disabled, and neurodiverse folx at a disproportionate risk of experiencing police violence. White supremacy systematically devalues the lives and experiences of BIPOC individuals, especially those who identify as disabled and/or are experiencing mental health challenges. We demand accountability for those responsible for her death. Black women deserve safety, they deserve respect, they deserve protection in their communities.

We acknowledge that Translate Gender is a predominantly white organization that serves a predominantly white population. Given this, it is vital that we center and uplift the voices of our BIPOC team and community members, and amplify the work of BIPOC, disabled, and neurodiverse creators. If you’re seeking support and/or would like to be a part of our ongoing conversations regarding how TG can better promote collective liberation, please email us at [email protected].

For over 150 years, Juneteenth has held profound significance within Black american communities. It commemorates the moment in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, following the end of the Civil War and two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

We acknowledge that while Juneteenth marks a significant moment in history, racial exploitation, systemic racism, systemic oppression, and white supremacy have not ceased at any point in the last one-and-a-half centuries, but continue to evolve.

To our Black community members - Happy Juneteenth! We hope you are celebrating and caring for yourselves and loved ones. Wishing you a joyful and restful day 🧡

To our white community members - This day is a time for you to educate yourselves on the origins of Black culture in america, including its oppression and appropriation, support Black owned businesses, and send reparations in the form of money/gifts to Black community members, organizations, and loved ones.
