Happy Fourth of July from PCBE!

Last Friday, the Economic Education Center and PCB&E hosted around 50 high school students from St. Louis Public Schools. The students are part of the TRiO summer program through the Higher Education Consortium of Metropolitan St. Louis.

They participated in a hands-on financial education activity called Mad City Money Financial Reality Simulation, where they role-played as adults and had to make financial decisions related to spending, saving, and debt reduction while creating a budget for their fictitious family. As you can see, they were busy trying to make decisions and we enjoyed having their energy in Harmon Hall. After finishing, they had lunch and completed the day with a campus tour! Thanks to all who were involved in making this a success, and special thanks to St. Louis Community Credit Union for their support and volunteering!

At the end of the spring semester, the Lindenwood University President's Ambassadors hosted the Student Choice Awards. This award ceremony honors professors from each college and are voted on by the students.

Congratulations to Dr. Luke Nicholson, Assistant Professor of Accounting, for receiving an award for the hardwork and dedication you show in continuing the academic success of students!

During the last week of classes, the Economics department hosted the 2024 Economics Student Research Expo. Students from the Econometrics class got to showcase their quantitative research projects through poster presentations. A variety of students and faculty stopped by to listen, ask questions, and even vote on their favorite project! Great job to all who were involved!

On Monday, April 22, students from the Investment Applications class made their final pitches to a live audience. These students spent the entire semester monitoring the Student Investment Fund, a $100,000 portfolio set up by the Board of Trustees. This fund provides our finance students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience analyzing stocks and managing a real portfolio. Since being approved in 2018, the fund has generated over $40,000 in profits. Congratulations to our students and faculty advisors!

Every spring, Lindenwood’s Office of Human Resources, along with Faculty and Staff Councils, hosts the annual Faculty and Staff Council Awards and Recognition Ceremony. The ceremony recognizes years of service recipients, retirees, and faculty and staff award winners. This year, the Plaster College of Business and Entrepreneurship was privileged to have three award-winners.

Dr. Maryann Townsend, Professor of Management and Information Technology, won the Excellence in Teaching Award for her combination of pedagogical innovation and effectiveness as a classroom teacher.

Dr. Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Robert W. Plaster Professor of Economic Education and Director of the Economic Education Center, was awarded the President's Scholar-Teacher Award for her merging of professional scholarship and pedagogy into her classes.

Eric Stuhler J.D., Professor of Management, won the Faculty Advisor & Mentor of the Year for his positive impact on students through advisory meetings and commitments to our students. This particular award is voted on by the student body with the judgment of the Lindenwood Student Government.

Our CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Research Challenge Student team (represented by Hannah Branstetter, Connor Triplett, Parker Cooke, and Abraham Boston) did an exceptional job at the final presentation of the Research Challenge Competition on February 16 at the Ritz Carlton in downtown St. Louis and secured second place overall (based on report and presentation scores) among major universities in our region (including WashU, Urbana Champagne, SIU-Carbondale, etc.) Their performance in the competition was applauded by industry professionals in the judging panel, as well as faculty advisors and peer students from other universities participating in the competition. We are very proud of our four member student team who started working on the report from end of October 2023 (based on their recommendation for the Ameren stock), and culminated with their final presentation on Friday, February 16.

Congratulations to the team, and a special shout out to Professors Gaurango Banerjee and John Loughlin for preparing our students!

The Robert W. Plaster College of Business and Entrepreneurship is pleased to announce that FREE tax preparation services are available on campus through April 10th! The VITA Tax Clinic is just one example where our students can engage with the community and provide a meaningful experience.

As part of the Introduction to Business and Free Enterprise course, seven teams were tasked with creating innovative business ideas to pitch to a panel of judges. The goal of this quick pitch is to convince the judges that their idea is desirable and worthy of further consideration.

Please join us on November 29 in Harmon Hall (Dunseth Auditorium) to support our students while they articulate their pitch.

Recently, Lt. Col. John Arata came to talk to our Consumer Behavior class to discuss a class project where many students will be working to help the Missouri National Guard Association with a membership strategy! Just another great example of giving students a first-hand experience of solving a real-world problem!

Lieutenant Colonel John Arata is the Inspector General for the 131st Bomb Wing. He is responsible for the inspection, exercise, and complaints resolution programs for the wing, a B-2 flying unit of over 1100 members at two locations headquartered at Whiteman Air Force Base near Warrensburg, MO. He works at Jefferson Barracks in south St. Louis County and has been the Vice President – Air of the Missouri National Guard Association since 2019.
