The LSHS Jazz Ensemble (and one Jazz Combo) had a blast playing for ShorePointe Health and Rehabilitation Center at their annual holiday dinner!

Introducing our NEW 6th/7th grade Band Director, Mr. Malabed!

Introducing our NEW Band Director for the 6th and 7th grade bands - Mr. Ronald Malabed!

Ronald Malabed is the former Director of Bands at Renaissance HS, Detroit School of Arts HS, and most recently from the Detroit Waldorf School. He received a full music scholarship to
attend college and has a Bachelor of Music Education, Master’s of Music Education, and an Education Specialist. Mr. Malabed has also received certificates for the completion of Level I Orff Schulwerk and Band Instrument Repair from the VanderCook College of Music. Throughout the years his bands HS/MS have consistently received superior and excellent ratings at the
Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association(MSBOA) District ,State, and State Jazz Band Festivals. In 2009, the Detroit School of Arts HS Band Department under his direction was
awarded the prestigious Grammy Signature Schools Award from the Grammy Foundation along with a $10,000 grant. Two symphonic bands under his direction were invited and performed at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in NY. Under his direction, the Detroit School of Arts HS Symphonic Band in 2013, was awarded the “Best Performance Group” at Carnegie Hall in 2013
by the National Band and Orchestra Association and the other from Renaissance HS received an “Excellence Award” in 2017. For many years, his high school jazz bands have been selected by MSBOA to perform at the Detroit Jazz Festival main stages. Ronald Malabed served as one of the directors for the Detroit Public Schools All City High School Marching Band for many years which performed consistently at the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parades, and made appearances at the Orange and Peach Bowls. His senior band students throughout his career have received millions of dollars in music scholarships to attend various universities throughout the United States. His bands have also performed throughout the US and Canada. In past years, Mr. Malabed was also awarded the Michigan School Band and Orchestra District XV Band Director of the Year on several occasions and nominated for the MSBOA State Band Director of the Year. As a resident of St. Clair Shores, he is honored and excited to be a part of the Lake Shore School District Family.

With the craze of Band Camp and the end of the summer, allow us to FINALLY introduce our NEW Director of Bands, 2015 LSHS Alumni, Greg Alter Jr! (As well as a throwback pic of his LSHS days 😉)

Greg Alter, Jr. is the new Director of Bands in Lake Shore Public Schools in St. Clair Shores, MI. He will be teaching 8th grade band and Jazz Band at Kennedy Middle School, and teaching 9-12th grade band at Lake Shore High School. Greg is a graduate with a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Instrumental Music Education from Wayne State University(2022). During his time at Wayne State, he played in the premiere ensemble, the Wind Symphony, as well as the Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Campus Band, and served as the Drum Major for the Warrior Marching Band from 2017-2019. Outside of his music life, he was a Dean’s Delegate for the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts, as well as served various roles for the Delta Mu Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta. Mr. Alter is currently a Masters Candidate at the American Band College of Central Washington University.

As a performing artist, Greg studied saxophone under Dr. Matthew Younglove, and Dr. James Fusik. He also studied conducting under Douglas Bianchi. Greg was the Soprano Saxophone Chair for the M/O Saxophone Quartet from its conception in 2018, until the end of its time in 2023. In that time, he has premiered works by composers Noah Anderson, and D.E. Traines. The M/O Quartet had performed at high schools in the Metro Detroit Area, as well as outdoor summer performances sponsored by the St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation Department. Greg currently plays Tenor Saxophone for the Warren Concert Band under the direction of Jeremy Duby.

Greg currently resides in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, where he enjoys doing side work as a Zamboni Driver at St. Clair Shores Civic Ice Arena, as well as enjoying sporting events, video games, as well as his dogs Reggie and Howie, and his cats Gus(tav Holst) and Lady.
