Today, we were beyond excited to have a group of incredible volunteers from Maryville University here at our cat shelter as part of Maryville Reaches Out 2024 🎉🐾

Maryville Reaches Out is an annual event where students, faculty, staff, and alumni come together for a day of community service, highlighting their commitment to civic engagement and social responsibility. Over 130 organizations were served by the Maryville community today, and we are so proud that we are one of them!

In addition to socializing with our cats (including our beloved Pepperoni! 🍕🐱), they put in hours of hard work cleaning our cat rooms, painting our walls to give the shelter a fresh new look, doing laundry, and even spraying weeds outside to beautify our outdoor space. All of their effort has made such a positive impact today!

Perhaps best of all, two of these wonderful volunteers have signed up to become regulars at our shelter. 🙌 We’re so grateful for their hard work and dedication, and for Maryville’s ongoing commitment to making a difference in the St. Louis community. Thank you, Maryville! 💙

⁉️ THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO Hmmm... ⁉️

Friends, Check out this amazingly beautiful cat! Her name is Sage.

Look at her long whiskers! Her eyes are a shade of green that match her gorgeous coat. Her fur is softer than a cloud. She is the type of cat that gazes directly at you, asking for pets and treats. When you speak to her, she speaks softly back. And when you hold out a hand, she leans into it for rubs and scratches, then rewards you with her purrs.

Sage is 12 years old, and spent the last four years of her life alone in a basement.

We were told this was because "she is mean".

Hmmm....

Since coming to us a few months ago, Sage has spent most of her daytime hours underneath a blanket in her condo. This makes a lot of sense. Life in a shelter can be over-stimulating, and that would be especially true for a cat that has, for years, been deprived of stimulation.

But in the early evening, when things quiet down, she comes out, seeking attention. She'll do the same during the day - all it takes is to say her name and approach her, and there she is.

She is not fearful. She acclimated herself to a routine of social deprivation because someone decided she didn't deserve love. How brave of her to even dare peak out of her blanket! Let alone give us another chance.

But here she is with her look of expectation - for care, for kindness, for compassion, for stewardship. Will we let her down?

You know we won't.

😽

🌟 We had a VERY SPECIAL VISITOR at the shelter today! 🌟

St. Louis icon and dedicated animal advocate, Kathy Leonard, stopped by to see all the incredible work we're doing to rescue and adopt more cats than ever before! 😺 Kathy has been a tremendous supporter of our shelter and countless other charities for decades, and it was such a joy to have her with us today.

We had a blast showing her the latest updates and chatting about exciting new ways we can work together to save even more lives! 🐾

Stay tuned for what’s next – great things are on the horizon! 💛

We are so excited to bring you another amazing cat today! Our fur-baby of the week is Minnie Mouser. Minnie Mouser is a cute, silly cat who just loves to be pet!

Minnie Mouser used to be a mouser (Hense the name) at a factory! But now she’s tired of the daily grind and would love to settle down with a loving family of her own. However, if a mouse does happen to wander into your home, she might just come out of retirement. She hasn’t been with us for very long, but she’s more than ready to find her people! She is about four years old, meaning she is an adult cat, who’s come into her grown-up personality. But that doesn’t mean that she isn’t still playful! On the contrary, Minnie is a cat who needs a good play time. While she’s still learning how to play with the wand, she’s a silly cat who needs to get her energy out! She loves being pet and hanging out. She also likes silvervine and a good brushing. She’s so sweet, you can see it in her eyes!

Minnie has crazy-long whiskers which store all of her awesomeness. Her fur is soooooo fluffy! She is as soft as down, and can’t wait to meet you. If you think Minnie might be the cat for you, come for a visit! You can see Minnie Mouser and many more of our awesome cats on petfinder. We’re Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center!

If Minnie Mouser was a food, she’d be an Oreo! (Double stuff of course!)

We’re back at it again with another spotlight post! This week we present the meaning of “orange:” Caspian!

This distinguished gentleman is from Salem, Missouri. He is less than a year old, but he seems to have mostly left his kitten days behind him. However, he is still a playful and silly cat. Caspian arrived at Animal House recently, and he is already super-sweet and ready for a home to call his own.

Caspian is so handsome! He is such a gorgeous orange color, with subtle and beautiful stripes on his head! Not to mention, his light green eyes are such a cute sight to see! Oh, and if you zoom in on his nose, you can tell that he has orange boy nose freckles! So adorable.

He’s not just cute, he’s wonderful too! He is an incredibly sweet boy whose only “crime” is the occasional love nibble. Overall, he is a chill, friendly cat who would love to have his very own family!

And if he were a food, he’d be a pumpkin! 🎃

💕 BRIGID HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!! 💕

Today was an emotional day at the shelter as we said goodbye to one of our most beloved cats, Brigid. This sweet girl has been with us for quite some time, facing a number of medical challenges along the way. But today, Brigid finally went home with someone who loves her just as much as we do—a wonderful volunteer who fell head over heels for her gentle spirit and the many long, cozy cuddle sessions they had together.

Brigid is one of those cats who can melt your heart with just a look, and the way she peacefully curls up with her new person is pure magic. We’re thrilled that she’s found someone who will cherish her and give her the care she needs for the rest of her days.

Thanks to our Sammy's Fund Program, Brigid will be permanently fostered in her new home, where she’ll be surrounded by love. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as she left because we are so very happy she’s finally found a home of her own.

Spunkie is a cat who lives up to his name. That’s why we’re super excited to give him the spotlight treatment! Spunkie has such a fabulous personality, we’re sure that once we tell you all about him, there’ll be a line out the door to meet him!

This gentleman is a long-haired adult cat, at 8 years old. He arrived with us this year as a transfer from another shelter, as we were better equipped to help him with his hyperthyroidism. Spunkie is looking for a home of his own with someone who will continue helping him to live his best life by monitoring and treating this condition. All he needs is his daily pill. And he takes it easily!

Spunkie is not only super-cute, he is also super sweet! He loves pets, and especially chin scratches. (As you can tell from two of our photos!) He is an extremely sweet cat, who likes to play a bit as well! He likes to watch as you move his mouse toy, very carefully waiting to strike. His little teeth even peek out when he is about to move for it. What a little tiger!

Come and visit Spunkie, or check us out on petfinder at Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center. There are so many cats waiting to meet you!

If Spunkie was a food, he’d be a chocolate cream cake! Just look at him… plus he’s sweet!

Is anyone else craving chocolate? It must be the two amazing kittens we’re putting the spotlight on today! It’s Hershey and Milky Way! These two boys are super silly kittens named after chocolate. In fact, they came in a group of SEVEN chocolate themed kittens. That’s an entire box! And unlike the phrase, you know exactly what you’re getting when you adopt one of these kittens: an adorable, silly, and affectionate friend!

These two kittens are relatively new to this whole being alive thing. They were only born this year, after all! Watching kittens grow is wonderful, you get to see them come into their own personality. And these boys are definitely showing theirs! They are both super sweet and love to be pet. They’re also very playful and would love to find a home with someone who likes to have fun! They’re also so cute, don’t you think? They’re such twins. Don’t worry about telling them apart though, because Milky Way has a bit more white on his chest than Hershey does. Although it may still be tricky from across the room! And look at those eyes… so beautiful!

Hershey and Milky Way may be copy cats, and they get along great, but they aren’t bonded together. So whether you are interested in one or both, come and have a visit! And check out all of our awesome cats that are available at Petfinder. We’re Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center!

Do we even need to say what foods they are? It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? Spinach and beans! We’re kidding of course. Their names work perfectly well!

Photos from Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center's post 08/10/2024

Happy Caturday everybody, today we have a special spotlight post for you all. We are highlighting not one but three cats! Do you remember a couple weeks ago when we gave Alaska the spotlight treatment and mentioned that she had five kittens? Well, Alaska and two of her kiddos have all been adopted! This is awesome news, but three of her kittens are still waiting to find homes of their own: Glacier, Moose, and Salmon! They all arrived in May of this year. They were found on Alaska Ave. hence the names!

They were probably born in April of this year, meaning they are definitely all still in kitten mode! Glacier is the short-haired gray tabby. He is known to be able to see straight into the soul. He is a super long boy and is extremely goofy. Salmon is the light orange cat. He can make the silliest faces, and he can make quite the impressive jump! Moose is the floofy gray and white boy. Even though he looks elegant and sophisticated, he is just as much of a goofball as his brothers! Plus, look at those whiskers. Impressive aren’t they!

Alaska’s kittens are known to sleep in massive cuddle puddles. It’s very tiring being crazy kittens, after all! Each one of them would make a fantastic addition to a home with time to play with and love them. You can check them out on our petfinder, Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center. Not to mention a whole bunch more amazing cats!

If they were food, they’d be a full course meal: Salmon for dinner, a bubbling glass of Glacier Champagne, and chocolate Moose for dessert!

Hey everyone! Today we are so happy to introduce the lovely Zoe!

Zoe is a younger cat at the age of 3. Even though she isn’t a kitten anymore, she’s a bit on the small side. We say, that makes her all the cuter! Her beautiful orange and white fur is beautifully reflected in her gorgeous yellow eyes. Not to mention, she’s super soft as well! She also has a dot on her nose. It may be a button of some kind, but we still don’t know what it does. Her tail is also super cute, it’s shaped like a zig-zag at the end! It must mean she’s special.

Zoe came to us originally in 2022, and was adopted. However, for circumstances completely outside of her control, she was returned to us. Now, Zoe is ready to find an awesome home to spend her days with her own human/s. Though she can be a little bit shy, she is extremely sweet. Once you get to know her, she’ll be your best friend!

Zoe is on petfinder at our page: Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center with so many other awesome cats. Check us out!

If Zoe was a food, she’d be marmalade toast, don’t you think? 🤔 🍊

Hey everyone! If you can believe it, we have another cat to show you all. (Don’t worry, we’ll never run out!) We’d like you to meet Dory, a very sweet and oh so silly girl. Just look at her. Her face says it all: super cute, super sweet, and prone to occasional ridiculousness. Her yellow-green eyes are so striking, and have we mentioned her impressively long and curled whiskers? So cute!

Dory is about 3 or 4 years old and she joined us this year. She was living outside, and no doubt had to endure so much trying to survive out in the elements… when she arrived with us, she then also had to overcome an illness which is common for cats who’ve lived in colonies with little or no veterinary care. Now though, Dory is blossoming into her true self! She is so sweet and quirky. She is a wee bit wobbly but gets around just fine! Though she can get overstimulated, she loves to be pet and hang out with people. She will give you an honest to goodness hug.

If you want to meet this wonderful cat, come pay her a visit! Also see us on petfinder at Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center.

And if she was a food, she would be a caramel-sea salt chocolate bar!

Photos from Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center's post 07/22/2024

It’s time to open the curtain on another amazing adoptable cat! This week, the lucky star is the beautiful Mariposa!

Mariposa is a relatively new addition to the Animal House Family. She arrived here this year, and she’s only a year old herself. That means she’s still got some of that silly kitten energy, and to our delight, she uses it to be adorable! Mariposa has all the makings of a lap cat: she LOVES people, pets, and being held! That’s right, when you open her enclosure door, plop! She’s flopped into your arms. And did I mention how playful she is? With how fun-loving and trusting she is, you’d think that Mariposa has had it easy. However much we’d like for that to be true, it isn’t. Before she came to us, Mariposa was a stray cat. When she arrived, she needed to be treated for fleas and dewormed to make sure she got to tip-top shape! Who knows what she went through when she was outside, but just like a butterfly she has transformed into a healthy young cat ready for a life of love! What a fitting name. 🦋
If you think Mariposa might be the cat for you, come pay us a visit! Check us out on petfinder (Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center) to see Mariposa and more amazing cats.

Oh, and if she were a food, she’d be an ice cream sandwich!

✈️ EXCITING NEWS! ✈️

This weekend, two of our amazing staff members got the incredible opportunity to attend the ASPCA Cornell Shelter Medicine Conference in New York! They left on Friday and have spent the past two days immersed in learning about shelter best practices from the industry's top experts. Topics covered include treating common shelter diseases like URI (upper respiratory infection), developing operational protocols, and understanding capacity for care.

We can't wait for them to return later this week and share their insights to help us all improve. A huge thank you to Coalition for Pet Progress for awarding our shelter a scholarship and making it possible for our team to attend a conference at one of the best veterinary schools in the nation!

Hey everyone! It’s that time again. It’s almost like we have a TON of amazing, adoptable cats! 😉 Today, it’s all about April. She’s silly, she’s unique, and so, so sweet!

At just a year old, April is a young cat. She’s still got some of the goofy playfulness of a kitten, but her sweetness? That’s definitely going to stay with her for good. That’s clear! There’s nothing she loves more than when her door opens up and she can get pet, picked up, and held. She simply loves people. She’s also very talkative, the better to get your attention with! Her meows are super cute, and we think they’re so different from other kitties too. You’ll have to come visit her and hear for yourself! This girl is just too sweet not to get adopted IMMEDIATELY. This girl is so fluffy, you could lose your hand petting her. Plus, she’s as soft as a spring bunny!

If she were a drink, she’d be black coffee with a ton of sugar!

07/13/2024

We are so happy to welcome this kitty as a new adoptable resident of our cat shelter. He is very sweet and so laid back that we have re-named him The Dude!

THANK YOU TO SO MANY!

Sweet, docile Multi had a scraped up neck that wouldn't heal. He had shown up at a feral colony but wasn't feral or street smart, and just wanted in the house. He'd obviously been a pet and desired to be a pet again. Yesterday he landed safely at Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center on his journey to getting a forever home.

There are so many people who made this possible. His carer responsibly makes sure that all the cats she feeds get spayed or neutered, something she can't afford, but she contacted the Jefferson County Pet Food Pantry, who funded Multi's neuter, rabies vaccine, and microchip through the OpSpot program. When he got hurt, kind donors to us funded his wound care, deworming, and flea control. This all made it less of a burden for Animal House to take him in for further care. There are others, too, who shared and volunteered for groups and networked.

Sometimes people apologize to us that they can't do more. But none of us can do it all! We all have our part to play, and we are so grateful to all who help out in their own way. ❤️

07/06/2024

It’s Spotlight Saturday again everyone! Today, we’re talking about an amazing cat who is relatively new to Animal House, but who’s been around the block. This is Alaska! She arrived this year with a litter of five kittens. What a good mama! (Mama may or may not be her nickname…) She was found
on Alaska Avenue hence her name and her kiddo’s names: Moose, Salmon, Tundra, Glacier, and Borealis! Mama Alaska was born in 2021 making her just three years old. It must have been so hard for her trying to raise kittens on the streets… and who knows how many litters she’s had in the past! But now that she and her babies are safe, Alaska is allowed to be someone’s baby now too. She is super sweet, and loves to be pet! This photo is her asking for some love ever so politely. If you want a wonderful, sweet kitty, Alaska is a great choice. You can learn more about her and all of our adoptable kitties on Petfinder, (Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center) or you could come for a visit!

Oh, and if she were a food, she’d be mashed potatoes! (The gourmet kind, with cheese, and lots of herbs and spices) because she smooshes into your hand when you pet her. 🥹

Photos from Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center's post 07/05/2024

Today we’re talking about kittens… not just how cute they are, but how we at Animal House take care of them, the work that goes into getting them healthy, and how you can help kittens if you find them outside! Kitten season. That’s a word that gets thrown around a lot in animal care and sheltering. But what makes kitten season so challenging? After all, they are just kittens. Tiny and cute… right? Well, those things are true, but there are sides to kitten care that might not be obvious. Due to the vast numbers of outdoor cats, kittens are everywhere. Especially once the weather warms, calls for shelters to take them in skyrocket. This is a big strain. Kittens almost always have some kind of infection. Fleas, worms, and other parasites that need to be treated before they can be adopted. Kittens that are found on the streets can look completely normal, but are almost always sick in some way. Despite these challenges, shelters like Animal House are here to help, difficult or not. We make sure that our kittens are healthy before sending them home with adopters. We give them the proper tests, deworm, deflea, and help them clear any sickness that they may have.

So what can you do if you find kittens outside? Especially when shelters are so overwhelmed with cats? One of the best things you can do to help the cats you’ve found enter a shelter is treat them for fleas using a topical solution and have them dewormed. You can do this for less than fifty dollars. If you want to help kittens even more and increase their chances of getting into a shelter or rescue faster, you can have them f***l tested and treated for any parasites they may have, and, if they are old enough, spay or neuter them. These services are expensive for shelters and can cause waiting times for intake, but if all of these needs are already taken care of, it makes opening space for kittens much easier! Lastly, donate to TNR programs in your community and advocate for more. Shelter and rescue organizations have way less space than there are kittens needing it, so serving them is only successful when we all partner to be good stewards of our community, and we thank you for being that for us!

We’re at it again everybody! It’s Spotlight Saturday, and today the stage is set for Little Bear. You may recognize his adorable face, because we’ve posted about Little Bear before! That’s because he has such a remarkable story. (And an even more remarkable personality!) Poor Little Bear came to us just this February. A kind Doordasher found him while working and had the compassion to rescue him from the cold! Unfortunately Little Bear lost the tips of both his ears to frostbite. It must have been so hard for him being out on his own. But now, he’s here with us! Safe, warm, and happy. He is quite the silly kitty! At only a year old, Little Bear is both super-sweet and super playful! He’s rambunctious, wacky, and oh so adorable. Just look at him! He has earned the name Little Bear through hard times, but what a cutie pie, ears or no! Other striking highlights are his crisp green eyes, pink nose, and the hilarious look he gets on his face when he wants to play! (He LOCKS IN!) He commands the room when it comes to getting attention from people, and he loves food as well! If you adopted Little Bear, you’d laugh every day. He is extremely friendly and always comes over to say hello. He’s a wonderful companion, an amazing cat to have as a friend!

Learn more about little bear and all of our amazing feline friends at our Petfinder, Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center.

If he were a food, he’d be cookie dough ice cream! We’ve been collecting a lot of ice creams, haven’t we? Maybe the heat is influencing our decision-making.

Hey everyone! Today we’d like to take the chance to update you about some of the wonderful cats we’ve posted about. That’s because some of the amazing cats we’ve put in the spotlight recently are now HOME!
That’s right, Simon, Stuart, Emrick, Chris, and Burton have all now been adopted, and we are so, so happy for them, and their new humans!

Sweet Simon with his absolutely glowing personality, is now in a home of his own! He’ll be able to give his people big hugs like he used to do with our crew, except he won’t have to wait for us to open his door!

Stuart and Emrick, best buddies, were able to go home together! We are so glad that the best of friends are going to play together for the rest of their lives.

Chris, adopted with his roommate Edna, will have so much room to blossom in his own home. Both of them will continue to be the sweet, amazing cats that they are, with their very own family.

And Burton, the oh so sweet and adorable senior, is now home! We are so thrilled that such a wonderful and affectionate cat is now able to live the rest of his life with all of the love and attention he deserves.

Thank you so much to their adopters and our wonderful community for hearing their stories, and coming along with them on their journeys. Here’s to more adoptions soon!
It is always a day to celebrate when cats get to go home!

(Photos in order are Simon, Chris, Emrick and Stuart, Emrick, and Burton!)
