At this year's Campus Compact Conference, Program Director for Student Outreach and Engagement Reza Rezvani gave a presentation on the power of peer-to-peer engagement, using the Haas Center's Frosh Service Liaison (FSL) Program as a model for how other institutions can design similar programs.

Reza has been leading the FSL Program since 2018. At the beginning of every academic year, twenty-five students, one from each of the frosh dorms, are elected as FSL coordinators. These students engage other residents in conversations about the principles of ethical and effective service and the different pathways to getting involved in service.

The coordinators also plan their own public service projects and share events that the students can participate in on campus. Through their involvement, they gain organizing experience and a deeper understanding of their own leadership styles.

Our Story

Stanford University’s Haas Center for Public Service serves as the hub of Cardinal Service, a bold campus-wide initiative to make service a distinctive feature of a Stanford education.

The Haas Center inspires and prepares students to create a more just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships. Guided by the Center’s Principles of Ethical and Effective Service, students engage in local, national, and global service across diverse pathways—community engaged learning and research, community organizing and activism, direct service, philanthropy, policy and governance, and social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility.

Cardinal Service focuses on four dimensions that have proven transformative in students’ lives: a full-time, quarter-long service experience (Cardinal Quarter); community-engaged learning classes (Cardinal Courses); sustained service engagement (Cardinal Commitment); and support to integrate service into any career and pursue work in the public interest (Cardinal Careers).
