Stanford University Program in International Relations

Bailey Nicolson is graduating with a degree in international relations (IR) with honors, and a focus in international comparative governance and world economy.

“IR is a great major because of how interdisciplinary it is; you take classes that are sciencey and environmental, history classes, economics classes, and a lot of other things in between,” said Nicolson. “I feel prepared and ready to tackle a number of issues and a diverse array of topics.”

As an IR honors student, she conducted an independent research project under faculty guidance, which she presented at a conference this spring. Her honors thesis focused on “the role of OPEC in global oil markets and what membership has meant for developing, oil-rich countries,” she shared.

During her time at Stanford, Nicolson also participated in Stanford in New York and studied abroad in Istanbul through the Bing Overseas Studies Program.

After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school to study international development and political economy.

Congratulations, Bailey!

Stanford University Program in International Relations

Brooke Beyer, international relations ’22, a program specialist with the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons in the U.S. Department of State, gave the keynote address at the fourth annual Global Perspectives, Global Careers: Stanford Fair for Community College Students.

Hosted by Stanford Global Studies, the day-long virtual event, which took place on April 27, aimed to provide community college students with opportunities to learn about pathways to international work and global citizenship while fostering connections with others interested in global studies.

91 students from 40 community colleges across the U.S. attended interactive workshops, presentations, and panel discussions featuring Stanford scholars, students, and alumni who spoke about various global topics.

In her speech, Beyer emphasized the importance of studying international affairs and developing a global perspective. She discussed how her experience as an American living in Singapore and England for eight years shaped her academic and professional goals. Admitting that while she might have been predisposed to an interest in international relations because of her time overseas, she believes that global studies is an important field of study for those of any background.

“I think the reality is, even if one never moves abroad or lives their whole life in the same small town, we live in a vastly interconnected world,” Beyer said. “Nearly all of us will end up working in an international space in some capacity, whether that’s through government, nonprofits, multilateral organizations, or through global business or the arts. In each of these spaces, a knowledge of international affairs is always beneficial to ground one’s work in the current moment.”

Stanford University Program in International Relations

Arabella Walley, ‘24, who is graduating from Stanford with a bachelor’s in international relations and a minor in human rights, says her education has provided her with a comprehensive understanding of the “conflicts, dilemmas, and human rights abuses that occur globally.”

“Choosing these two subjects was, in fact, my way of trying to understand the world around me a little bit better,” she explained. “And while there is still much more for me to learn, I feel emboldened and excited to start thinking toward potential solutions.”

Following graduation, she will pursue a John Gardner Public Service Fellowship, which allows graduating seniors to work for 10 months in a public service or social impact organization of their choice alongside a mentor who is a senior leader.

“I’m hoping to work at the state or city level in U.S. immigration policy as I plan to pursue a lifelong career in this field,” shared Walley. “After years of studying immigration, I am incredibly excited to begin my career in human rights and learn more about what it takes to reform a system as complex (and flawed) as the U.S. immigration system.”
